IKEA BRINGS BUDGET WIRELESS CHARGING TO NEW IPHONES

One great feature of the new 2018 iPhones is no-contact Wireless Charging using the Qi (Chi) standard, which is also supported by some existing Android phones.
Apple’s market influencing power is so huge, that global companies like Starbucks are now adding in-store Qi charging to tempt people to drink their horrible coffee (so not happening in Melbourne!) and Qi is set to become the global charging standard for restaurants, hotels and indeed homes. This is a win for phone users of every persuasion.
Apple make a very clever AirPower mat, that charges all their personal devices and shares information between them, but it won’t be available until 2018 and is pretty expensive.
So thankfully for those clutching iPhone 8s, the nice Swedes at IKEA have come charging to the rescue with an astonishingly wide range of products, including seven lamps, two bedside tables and six different charging pads, starting at $39, all with typical oddball names. Some were already available, some are new and all are sensibly priced.
We headed for our nearest IKEA store to fondle the offerings and these are our picks of the range.
1. The NORDMÄRKE at $59 charges one phone very stylishly. The equivalent Belkin and Mophie pads cost $99 and don’t look nearly as good, so this one is a bargain.
2. The SELJE, is a neat bedside table with built-in charging that sells for just $78.99. Minimal is and does.
3. Our favourite is the RIGGAD, a smart work lamp that doubles as a charger. Winner of a prestigious international iF Design Award it will be gracing your correspondent's desk, as soon as his iPhone X arrives.
Congrats to IKEA for bringing this range to market and and expanding it so rapidly.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
