KEF’s Uni-Core Tech Gets Maximum Bass From Minimum Space

KEF boasts that it's created maximum bass in minimum space thanks to its new Uni-Core technology.
KEF's Uni-Core technology has enabled the British audio specialist to create an entirely new take on subwoofer and speaker designs.
The patent-pending Uni-Core technology delivers ultra-compact size and powerful performance, creating the audio lover's dream of a powerful but discreet subwoofer or speaker, says the Maidstone-based manufacturer.
The new KEF-developed Uni-Core technology is said to redefine the size versus performance battle. The result, we're told is an unprecedented triumph of quality sound.
The technology enables high-level performance while significantly reducing the subwoofer or speaker cabinet volume.
KEF's ambition to create an aesthetically pleasing piece of audio equipment to complement your living room was second only to the subwoofer providing accurate and deep bass. With this aim of desirable aesthetics and uncompromising performance, the first challenge was to fit two drivers into a compact cube enclosure.
Dr Jack Oclee-Brown, Head of Research & Development at KEF, told StereoNET:
To deliver deep and loud bass from a compact product is a big engineering challenge. The Uni-core is a breakthrough technology for KEF because it allows us to pack two drivers into a tighter space without compromising their performance.
Uni-Core combines the dual force-cancelling drive units into a single motor system with its overlapping voice coils concentrically arranged. The coils are different sizes on each cone, which means when the cones move backwards, the coils can occupy the same space within the cabinet. The upshot is that the cabinet is very compact with less overall volume required when compared to the needs of conventional driver technology.
The space saved allows the drivers to have far more excursion than an equivalent-sized force-cancelling design, unlocking more output and depth from much less space, says KEF.
We have been told that the new Uni-Core technology will be applied in an upcoming new KEF product to be announced this month so keep checking StereoNET for updates.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
