Kronos Innovates the Turntable World

In a world first, Canadian based manufacturer Kronos announces their counter-rotating dual platter suspended turntable, by reassessing key turntable elements including the motor, platter, suspension and materials.

On their latest development, Kronos states "Designed to provide an unparalleled level of stability, creating a suitable environment to extract more and more of finest musical information from the vinyl records".

"By design, turntables currently on the market are constructed either with or without a suspension system. Suspended turntables are better isolated from both mechanical and sound vibrations emitted from the speakers. These turntables are often preferred to rigid ones as they often deliver a more organic sound and a softer presentation. However, the suspended platter and tone arm present a significant downside – a pronounced blurring of the musical signal. This is caused by 'Torsional Forces', a natural tendency of the sub platter frame to rotate in sync with the platter. Although this rotation is controlled by springs, or other elastic parts found in the suspension, at this new point of equilibrium, the slightest vibration coming from the stylus reading the groove is echoed back to the stylus, out of phase. The result: the stereo image produced is blurred and distorted. Critical musical information is permanently lost."

The innovative Kronos turntable breaks the rule of traditional audio design of turntables as it features two identical high mass platters; one above the other rotating in opposite directions and moving at precisely the same speed. Through the use of aerospace metallurgic technology, Kronos claims to have actually eliminated the unwanted torsional forces, resulting in a unique turntable platform with unrivaled stability.

The Kronos is exclusive; entirely hand-assembled and duly adjusted and tested, before being shipped in its custom built flight case. While only 250 units will be manufactured, Australian distributor Absolute Hi End has stock arriving in just three weeks. Actual pricing and local availability is yet to be confirmed, however Boris Granovski of Absolute Hi End told StereoNET that interest already has been fantastic.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
