Aqua La Scala MKII DAC Released

We’ve coveted, no lusted after La Scala’s D/A converter from the micro-second it was released back in 2010. We had the opportunity to hear what it could do in stores smart enough to range it and at a couple of audio shows.

Le Scala MKII

The performance of the La Scala always struck us as stellar. So it’s hardly a surprise to hear it described as "the standard reference in a class by itself".

It has stayed atop its horde of rivals thanks to a monitor class sound quality and its svelte, minimalist styling. Add to these a finish inside and out that’s normally found on swish Patek Philippe or Rolex watches and it’s not hard to understand why La Scala remains for many music loving audiophiles, an object of desire. Now comes the promise of a new, improved version.

Improving the sonic performance of the La Scala was no small task. The first step was to enhance the overall precision of the digital circuit. La Scala MkII inherits the innovative proprietary DFD decoding without any digital filter, assuring a pure and precise digital signal. In addition Aqua - acoustic quality has developed a single-stage signal amplifier: VALVE / MOSFET direct-coupled and LED bias. It uses ECC81 tube - a High-Frequency triode - for its low noise main feature. This is directly connected to High-Voltage MOSFET to enable:

  •  - simplicity
  •  - wide bandwidth
  •  - fast response
  •  - no overshoot, no ringing, no roll-off
  •  - lower output impedance compared to conventional circuits
  •  - no feedback
  •  - low distortion

La Scala MkII uses long-life valves with an average life of approximately 10.000 hours.

Currently there is no Australian distributor for Aqua - acoustic quality, however discussions are currently in place with Australian companies.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
