The Philips Fidelio L4 is the successor to the L3, of which we said presented "a surprisingly detailed and sophisticated sound that's tonally even, with delicacy and insight." Furthermore, Bose and Sony should be concerned, judging by what Philips says about its latest noise-cancelling over-ears.

The L4 retains the proprietary 40mm driver but now boasts added stiffness thanks to a graphene coating which is said to result in less distortion and a cleaner sound in the midrange and higher frequencies. Meanwhile, a feeling of luxury is introduced by a leather-covered touch-control zone.

Your tunes are received over the latest flavour of Bluetooth, 5.3, which offers multipoint seamless wireless switching across devices, Auracast broadcasting for shared listening over wireless, and LE (low energy) audio for better battery life. The latter translates to 50 hours of playback – 40 with ANC on - plus a quick charge of 15 minutes returns five hours of playback.

Additionally, the Fidelio L4 supports LC3 and Sony's LDAC codecs for high-quality wireless playback. Meanwhile, cabled listening is available via the 3.5mm headphone jack or USB-C for true hi-res listening.

Philips has also worked its magic on the active noise-cancelling (ANC) aspects, too, so we are told. This has seen the venting port for the mic that measures external noise being moved to the rear of the ear cup, making it less sensitive to wind noise. In addition, this "feed-forward" mic's sensitivity can now also be automatically reduced as wind noise increases. Finally, while we're on the subject of mics, Philips has added another built-in voice pick-up mic dedicated to removing background sounds which should mean even clearer voice calls.

Joining the Fidelio L4, Philips also introduced the Fidelio T2 wireless earphones.

Philips boasts that the T2 true wireless earbuds are 20 per cent smaller than the T1 while still packing in active noise cancelling tech. Additionally, the company claims that the charging case is 40 per cent more portable.

The T2 also follows the L4, sporting graphene-coated drivers for less distortion, and the buds also benefit from Bluetooth 5.3. In addition, we are informed that the earphone'ANC system now uses bone conduction technology to reduce wind noise.

The IPX4-rated in-ears are splashproof and can manage 36 hours of playback on a full charge - that's an extra 60 minutes on the outgoing model.

Philips Go Sports

Philips also introduced two models for active types to its Go Sports range: the A5508 and A5608 - true wireless and neckband/ bone conducting form factors, respectively. Naturally, they are IPX5-rated for sweat and water resistance.

The A5508 gets active noise cancelling, whereas the open-ear A5608 is equipped with an LED light built into the neckband for you crazy early morning/ late evening runners.

Both utilise Bluetooth 5.3, and so support the LC3 codec and multipoint. The A5508 will see you through seven hours of exercise on a single charge, with a further 21 hours from the charging case. Meanwhile, the A5608 will last for six hours before needing a boost.

Sleep Earphones

Finally, we come to Philips' first foray into sleep headphones. The N7808 are made in collaboration with sleep specialist Kokoon and aims to help the wearer drift off into undisturbed sleep.

Philips has put all the main electronic componentry into an enclosure mounted behind the user's head, making the earbuds less bulky - just 6mm thick - and less noticeable when wearing them lying down.

Sleep monitoring sensors measure the wearer's sleep pattern and then adapts the audio accordingly - fading the audio as you drift off to sleep, for example. Feedback on your sleep quality and patterns is delivered via the Kokoon app. In addition to using the Kokoon app, you can send soothing sounds to them via Calm and Headspace Apps.

Philips says that the N7808's noise isolation design, alongside its intelligent noise masking feature that slowly introduces precisely tuned white noise to block out external noise peaks, should result in sweet undisturbed sleepytimes.

The 10-hour battery stamina should see you through a good night's kip. During the waking hours, you can use them as regular earphones; they even have a hands-free calls feature.
