Let’s Hear It For LG

Not a brand normally thought a serious player in the Audio Video space, LG Electronics has an arsenal of ranges and products primed and ready to attack its rivals in Australia.

The keenly contested mass audio video market, you’d think belonged to stalwarts the calibre of Sony and Panasonic. LG wants pole position.

LG says its foray into 2014’s crowded marketplace is led by its Soundbars and Sound Plates which are really Blu-ray and Bluetooth equipped sound systems/streamers.

But we think the hero products which these genres of products will be enhancing are LG’s TVs. The Korean giant has been storming TV lands beach heads with swish, feature laden models for several years. Snaring a large slice of the traditional TV pie hasn’t been that hard of a slog thanks to the accolades coming LG’s way for its TV's picture quality. And if we believe the reviewing fraternity this quality has gone up several notches in quality over that time.

Ultra HD TVs

LG’s flagship models are logically 4K endowed models. LG trumpets these sets as cutting edge models with bundles of clarity, a refresh rate faster than Usain Bolt and an onscreen motion smoother than Teuscher chocolate.

The new sets come in screen sizes of 49, 55, 65, 79 and 84-inch. Prices start at $2499 and climb to $5999 for the 79-inch model. Yet to be announced is the price tag for the 84-inch model.

LG says key features of its UB850T and UB980T models are their Ultra HD Engine Upscalers and the webOS operating platform which if you believe the hype, makes LG sets smarter than Martin Rees but so simple to use anyone could feel their way around the supplied remote control.

Curved OLED TV

All good. But the model we’d like to take to our bedroom, is LG’s curvaceous 55EA9800, an OLED model with a slick 4.3mm thick screen which has a 5-degree curve. This 55-inch model is priced at a reasonable $5,999. Who says there’s no money in flatscreen TVs?

Soundbar and Sound Plates

LG is certainly hoping that after you buy one of its TVs, the smooth talking salesperson attending to your needs and your wallets may also nudge you to add one of its Soundbars or Sound Plates to your new TV.

The 2014 range of Sound Bars comprise four models priced from $249-$749. LG’s presser was long on hypes you’d expect but short on detail and didn’t provide a vestige of info on sizes.

LG’s interesting Sound Plates comprise three models priced from $299-$749. The range topping LAB540W has a built-in Blu-Ray player and a seperate subwoofer and a touted 320-watts of surround sound. Hmmm.

Home Theatre System

Three complete systems priced from $649-$1099 will be in stores from now to June. The flagship BH9540TW has four vertical firing upright speakers and what’s called a 'Private Sound Mode' which allows you to hear the TV from your smartphone via Wi-Fi. Why? So you can slot in your headphones and beaver away at your fave shows without disturbing your household.

BluRay Players and Recorders

LG will be tempting you with five models priced from $109-$649. They are all available now. LG will be ranging a basic DVD player, the DP132 which has an RRP of $49.

3D Blu-Ray Recorder

LG has three models in stores now priced from $349-$599

For those still hanging on to their video cassettes, LG’s $349 RC689D DVD/VCR recorder may be the way to watch them. LG is also ranging a DVD HDD recorder, the RH735T which will have ann RRP of $449. Two hard drive recorders will also be available. These are the 500GB HR945T and the 1TB HR949T. LG provided no pricing.

Micro and Mini HiFis

No less than five Mini systems priced from $249-$1999 are on sale now. The solitary DVD/micro model is the $399 DM2740DAB which alerts you it has a digital radio tuner onboard.

Lifeband Touch

People pounding the pavement or the gym treadmill will like LG’s Lifeband Touch; a $199 smart activity tracker you wear on your wrist which monitors calorie consumption, 3-axis accelerometer and altimeter to measure distance, speed and number of steps and calories burnt. Compatible with Android and iOs smartphones, we predict lifestyle products with the novelty of this desirable gadget will get LG more traction than it needs.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality.
