M8AUDIO TO DEBUT AT MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL HI-FI SHOW

Bolstered by a rave review overseas, the new Australian speaker brand M8audio is keen to let local music lovers have a long listen to its beautifully made models.
And beautiful they are.
The three models in M8audio’s sensible range are two compacts and a matching subwoofer.
The compact $6000 Maxwell uses an expensive honeycomb braced cabinet that’s intelligently dampened using the brand’s unique viscoelastic dampeners and decoupling feet.
The Maxwell soars high and digs deep thanks to a pure beryllium tweeter with a 29mm voice coil and a 187mm bass/midrange driver whose cone is made from the rather exotic Egyptian papyrus. Its motor is neodymium while the crossover is high-end parts studded including Alumen-Z capacitors.
The Rocket 5.1 Super Resolution takes speaker styling from a craft to an art form with its curvaceous and expensive cabinets. All of M8audio’s woodwork is done in-house using a state-of-the-art CNC router.
This two way can be bought in a stereo pair or as the name suggests, is also available to serve along with the Sub One Ten, as a home theatre speaker package.
For the very sane price of $2800 pair, the Rocket is excellent value. It creates sound via a 22mm aluminium/magnesium dome tweeter and a 132mm Egyptian papyrus cone bass/midrange driver powered by a neodymium motor.
The Sub One Ten is self-powered and certainly rates as the best-looking sub on the market with its Salvador Dali inspired contoured cabinet.
Residing inside is 290mm paper fibre cone driver with four layers used to add rigidity to the cone. The amplifier used is a Class-D model that generates 300w RMS. Price is $2400.
So how did M8audio’s Danish-born head designer and owner, Mark Thomsen end up in Australia?
He ventured far from Denmark to join his wife here back in 2010. By 2015 Mark was established in Australia and as it was an opportune moment, he founded M8audio.
Three years later he is in full production mode, handcrafting three sublime sounding and stylistically innovative speaker models. The Maxwell reviewed recently in a respected European online hifi site, earned the highest praise for its build and sound quality.
His talent or achievements do not surprise those who know Mark. The man lived and breathed electronics in his role as an R&D, Production and Quality Control Specialist.
Just as important to his audio design work was a complimentary, lifelong passion for audio. Over the years he's built his own pre and power amplifiers and a mountain load of speakers ranging from open baffle to transmission lines.
He also experimented with horn-loaded models in quest of the perfect sound. Judging by the reviews, Mark Thomsen’s current speaker range signal that it's mission accomplished for M8audio.
You'll get the opportunity to hear the range for yourself at this year's Melbourne International HiFi Show, October 12-14 at the Pullman Mercure Hotel, Albert Park. Tickets on sale now.
M8audio will feature in Room 1201.

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories.
