Magico A5 Loudspeakers Launched

Magico has announced the A5, the company's largest and most advanced A-series speaker.

The Magico A5 speakers look stunning in their brushed black anodised 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminium cabinets, the same material as experienced in the maker's acclaimed Q-series.

Weighing in at 180 pounds each, the sealed cabinets are further bolstered by complex internal bracing, cutting resonance to the very minimum. A dedicated sub-enclosure houses the new 5-inch full-cone midrange driver, protecting it from the extensive back wave energy of the bass drivers.

Magico A5 Drivers

The A5 is rocking a trio of newly designed 9-inch bass drivers. These are an enhanced version of Magico's Graphene Nano-Tec cone that combines Graphene layered carbon fibre with advanced new core materials to achieve the highest possible stiffness to weight ratio. Additionally, the driver chassis boasts an impressive combination of stiffness and damping that is said to minimise acoustical contribution and maximise airflow. Also, the bass driver features a 5-inch pure Titanium voice coil and large copper cap with ½-inch of linear excursion. The results are quoted as 115 dB SPL (@ 50 Hz, 1 meter) while maintaining very low distortion and inductance below 0.18 mH.

As well as also incorporating an advanced Graphene carbon fibre sandwich cone, the new midrange driver is said to enable wider dispersion and greater midrange transparency. A new foam surround helps achieve ideal cone/surround integration, faster settling time and impressively low distortion, according to Magico. You will also find a pure Titanium voice coil in the mid driver's all-new motor system. We are told that the super stabilised magnetic field and pure copper pole cap minimise eddy currents and maximise efficiency.

The A5's 28mm dome tweeter sports a pure beryllium-diaphragm encasing a customised neodymium motor system in an engineered back chamber with the company's most advanced damping materials. The company states that this enables ultra-low distortion, high power handling, extensive dynamic capabilities and extended linear voice coil movement.

Magico A5 Crossover

Magico A5

Ensuring that all five drivers work in concert to produce a claimed frequency response of 22 Hz – 50 kHz, Magico uses its proprietary Elliptical Symmetry Crossover topology built with state-of-the-art components from Mundorf EB Gmbh of Cologne, Germany.

The A5 will be the first product in the world to offer Mundorf's new M-Resist Ultra foil resistors that are said to deliver greater power handling, transparency and liquidity. The 3-way network features a 24 dB per octave Linkwitz-Riley filter that is designed to maximise frequency bandwidth while preserving phase linearity and minimising intermodulation distortion.

Price and availability

The Magico A5 is scheduled to start shipping in Spring 2020 with a recommended UK price of £24,998/pair.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
