We reviewed the MH40 and MW60 in 2016 and liked their premium build and sound. Both ‘phones have now been given a makeover.

The face-lift is courtesy of celebrity inkmaster, the tattooist Scott Campbell.

The facelift now sees these two flagship models gaining new black metal frames finished with a choice of either white or black leather cushioning.

Unmistakably the pair also receives Campbell’s famous snake artwork and bicoastal tattoo artwork. They also have the artist’s quote, “The smartest things I ever did were stupid things for love” emblazoned on an ear pad.

Which is hardly surprising since both these Limited Edition models were conceived to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

The restyling of M&D’s top headphones was laced with an element of risk. Jonathan Levine, the brand’s founder, and CEO has been reported as saying:

I have always thought Scott’s work was quite genius. When I met Scott in Hong Kong, I learned we shared a willingness to take risks in pursuit of our dreams, even if it means sometimes making mistakes.

One look at the two new phones ensures the makeover poses few risks. Both look amazingly arty and are sure to appeal to a huge audience.

Fans of the original headphones will be pleased to know that M&D have not tinkered with the circuitry and parts inside either model. It was felt the pair sounded very good already and did not require any tweaking.

So, the Limited Edition MH40 carries the same 45mm neodymium drivers as the engine of its closed back, over-ear design.

Impedance is said to be 32ohm, and the weight is 12.7 ounces. Build quality is high, and the MH40 is crafted using forged aluminium, real lambskin leather and stainless steel.

The MH40 is bundled with two cables. One is a 1.25-metre cable with built-in remote and microphone for iOS devices.

The MW60 is a wireless model with 16-hour battery life. Like the MH40 it comes with a carry case and a cable for wired listening. Its range is about 10 metres.

Build quality follows the same pattern of the MH40, which is to say it’s premium grade. But it’s also a tad heavy weighing 12.2 ounces.
