Musical Fidelity M3x Vinyl Phono Stage Announced

Musical Fidelity has announced its first M3 level phono stage, joining the likes of the M3sCD. The M3x Vinyl is compatible with both moving magnet and moving coil cartridge systems.

The Musical Fidelity M3x Vinyl benefits from a full feature set and a discrete circuit layout, resulting in exceptional sound characteristics, states the manufacturer.

Designed to intuitively accommodate a wide range of modern cartridges, the M3x Vinyl sports a minimalist aesthetic and promises high-performance sound quality.

The M3x Vinyl draws from the upper-tier M6x Vinyl design and features an entirely discrete circuitry, which results in better technical measurements and better sound, says Musical Fidelity. Eschewing integrated circuits and devices such as op-amps, instead favouring a discrete circuits design, results in a more neutral, natural and dynamic sonic signature and the Musical Fidelity sound.

The M3x Vinyl is housed in a steel chassis with a thick, heavy aluminium fascia, which matches the whole M-Series aesthetic and brings rigidity to the product and isolation from outside interferences.

The M3x Vinyl also employs split-passive equalisation in separate amplification stages for its RIAA curve. This method is more costly than the typical single EQ network in a feedback loop design chosen by many others, but it ensures the most accurate reproduction of the ideal EQ curve. Additionally, we are told that split-passive equalisation also allows for better impedance matching, further optimising the electrical path the music flows through.

The special audio transformer with low core saturation utilised within the M3x Vinyl decreases electromagnetic radiation, which is essential for proper operation. Internally, the M3x Vinyl affords space between the transformer and the amplification section inside the chassis while also installing electromagnetic shielding for extra protection. The result is an incredibly high signal-to-noise ratio of 71dB (MM).

Also to be applauded is that the M3x Vinyl consumes zero power while on standby, thanks to a new proprietary power solution making it a greener choice, too.

Assembled and wired fully by hand within the EU to meet the highest production standards, the M3x Vinyl sports RCA inputs and outputs, adjustable impedance range of 25Ω – 1200Ω (MC) and capacitance of between 50 – 400pF (MM) settings and a +6dB gain boost to help particularly quiet cartridges.

Musical Fidelity M3x Vinyl

Although the M3x Vinyl is the lowest-priced phono stage in the M-Series range, it still fully embodies Musical Fidelity's hallmark values of uncoloured, stress-free sound, outstanding technical performance, and great value for money.

Musical Fidelity's M3x Vinyl is available now with either a black or silver faceplate for £1,200 (SRP).

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
