Optoma ‘Photon Go’ Portable Laser Projector with Google TV

Optoma is officially unveiling the 'Photon Go' this morning at the Bristol Hi-Fi Show and our team on the ground will be fascinated to see this compact, Ultra Short Throw laser projector in action.
With Google TV, a built-in battery, and RGB laser technology, the Photon Go looks set to shake up the portable projector market when it launches in April 2025.
For those at the show, the Photon Go is set to debut in rooms 404 and 410 on the 4th floor, with a dedicated media presentation at noon in room 404. Designed to deliver big-screen entertainment in any room—or even outdoors—the ultra-short throw lens can create a 100-inch image from just 25cm away, making it a compelling option for those short on space but big on entertainment.
At the core of the Photon Go is its RGB triple laser technology, a clear step up from lamp-based or single-laser projectors. By using individual red, green, and blue lasers, Optoma claims it can deliver a wider colour gamut, higher brightness perception, and more accurate contrast levels while avoiding the brightness degradation that traditional lamps suffer over time. However, with 1080p resolution rather than native 4K, questions remain over how it will compare to premium alternatives regarding sharpness and clarity.
Designed for cable-free convenience, the Photon Go features an integrated battery, Wi-Fi 5, 6, and 7, and Google TV built-in. This means users can stream directly from platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and Disney+ without needing an external device. Optoma has included dual 10W Bluetooth speakers with Dolby Audio for audio, though serious home cinema enthusiasts will likely prefer an external sound system.
Portability is a significant selling point, and Optoma is positioning the Photon Go as an all-round entertainment solution for both indoor and outdoor use. Whether it’s movie nights, gaming sessions, or children’s storytelling, the Time-of-Flight auto keystone and focus ensure a sharp and correctly aligned image in seconds.
Adding to its versatility, the built-in battery provides up to 1.5 hours of wireless media playback, or up to 4 hours when used in Bluetooth speaker mode, making it ideal for quick screenings or extended music sessions without needing a power source. You are able to augment its stamina by connecting a power bank.
Oliver Blundell, Product Manager for Home & Mainstream at Optoma, told StereoNET:
We believe entertainment should be accessible to anyone, anytime, and the Optoma Photon Go embodies that vision. This projector redefines portability while offering premium performance.
With an official launch set for April 2025, Photon Go enters a competitive market alongside offerings from brands like XGIMI, Samsung, and Anker Nebula. While its RGB laser system and ultra-short throw lens give it an edge regarding colour and placement flexibility, real-world brightness and contrast performance will be key factors. StereoNET will keep a close eye on its performance when it officially launches in a few months and hopefully, we’ll get a chance for some hands-on impressions soon.
We have also learned that Optoma intends to offer a handy carrying bag for the Photon Go to make it even easier to take with you wherever you fancy.
Optoma Photo Go will priced at £900 / €999 when it goes on sale in April 2025.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality.
