Portable Bluetooth Speaker With Bite

Run of the mill Bluetooth speakers seem to stampede into StereoNET's office. Some are drab, others simply dull. A few are recalled as standing out from a homogenous pack. Supertooth’s D4 Stereo speaker falls nicely into those worthy of an audition, if you’re in the market for this category of product.

You’d be surprised how in demand the Bluetooth enabled audio products are. The buyers are young tablet/smartphone consumers who cram all their music in to their devices. Portability, ease of use and the ability to play loud are the features top of their wish list.

The D4 is honestly rated at 8 watts but the sound pressure levels it elicits makes it sound like a lot more. As far as sound quality goes for any of these devices in audiophile terms, it frankly doesn’t rate a mention. But given the market it targets we’d have to say the D4 stands out with a decent stab at midrange and treble that won’t have you reaching for the 'off' button.

My kids use their Bluetooth speaker systems mainly in the bathroom. Go figure. My son can’t take a shower without hearing the music he’s stashed on his Galaxy. Ditto for my daughter who also wouldn’t think of completing a makeup session without streaming from her Apple Air to a Bluetooth Speaker system.

The thing is, both really loved their time with the D4. I asked them what they liked most and both said the sound was enjoyable, the carry handle a brilliant idea, the "cool" styling and the playback time when used as a portable. The Australian distributor MobileZap tells us the D4 has a playback time of up to 12 hours depending on how far up the scale you crank the volume.

The Supertooth D4 has NFC pairing and will "pair" with compatible devices simply by touching the two together. Supertooth D4 comes in black, Orange, Blue, Gray or White finish. Price is $75.99

The lure of being able to stream music to a portable speaker like the D4 from up to ten metres away will continue to drive the market for this popular category. As for StereoNET staffers wading through a mountain load of these devices every week, I think I can safely say for all of us we await the day Dave Wilson of Wilson Audio dips his toe into the portable Bluetooth speaker market and delivers say, a wee wireless Sophia or Duette. Even more appealing is the idea of Italian speaker icon, Sonus Faber creating a Bluetooth mini Cremona Auditor M. We can only dream ...

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
