PRO-JECT PHONO BOX ULTRA 500 SHINES MORE THAN MOST PRE-AMPLIFIERS

Pro-Ject has released the Phono Box ultra 500. The limited edition phono pre-amplifier sports a chromed copper case for excellent noise suppression. Needless to say, it is also quite the eye-catcher.
The '500' suffix not only points to the limited numbers the new component will be available in worldwide, but it also commemorates the 500,000th Phono Box that Pro-Ject shipped in early 2018. That milestone resonated with the company as they went on to create this one-of-a-kind phono preamp.
Phono Box ultra 500 is like no other phono preamplifier in its segment. The polished chrome surface will certainly outshine its competition. However, we all know that beauty is not just skin deep.
Underneath that shimmering surface is a copper body. Additionally, the Phono Box ultra 500 boasts a fully discrete, opamp-less design. This design enabled the company to realise an incredibly musical sound.
As well as opting out of using operational amplifiers, they also employed polystyrene capacitors. These capacitors are known amongst audiophiles as the holy grail for phono preamplifiers. The split RIAA equalisation enables a pin-point accurate representation of the RIAA curve.
The Phono Box ultra 500 is available worldwide as a limited edition of 500 pieces for £299. The phono pre-amp comes in exclusive and high-quality wood packaging.
Pro-Ject has also introduced The Phono Box S2 Ultra (£200.00 SRP). This unit replaces the Phono Box DS and DS+ models in the Pro-Ject range. Again, utilising a fully discrete electronic layout without the use of opamps. There are a series of dip-switches on the bottom of the solid metal casework so you can dial in the required settings for impedance (MC), capacitance (MM) and gain, accommodating any Moving Magnet or Moving Coil cartridge.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
