Shure SRH840A and SRH440A Comfortable Content-Creator Headphones Released

Shure's second-generation SRH840 and SRH440 headphones sport a modern matte finish and further upgrades.

Shure's SRH840A and SRH440A headphones promise to improve on comfort and durability and, while aimed at 'professionals', could entice budget-conscious home head-fi fans.

Shure SRH840A

The updated SRH840A and SRH440A boast lower harmonic distortion and more precise left-right driver matching in their closed-back, circumaural design.

Both are loaded with 40mm neodymium dynamic drivers with the SRH840A claiming a frequency response of 5Hz-25kHz, and sensitivity of 197 dB/mW (@ 1 kHz). Figures that Shure says deliver professional-grade sound with rich bass, clear mid-range, and extended highs. This is the premium 'professional monitoring' model and is treated to gold detailing on the cups.

Meanwhile, the SRH440A are aimed at podcasters and voted most likely to be abused by rehearsing musicians. Here you are offered a 10Hz-22kHz frequency response range with 97 dB/m (@ 1 kHz) sensitivity, which Shure states provides consistent and uncoloured sound.

The wide padded headband featured on the new models should provide comfort during extended listening sessions, while the detachable, locking 9-foot straight cable makes it replaceable when the time comes. The headphones also come with a threaded 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch adapter.

The SRH440A are priced at £89, while the SRH840A headphones cost £135.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
