Technics SL-100C Direct Drive Turntable Launched

Technics has announced its new SL-100C turntable that shaves off £100 for entry to the Technics direct-drive club.
With the SL-100C Direct Drive Turntable, Technics ticks off all the features you would expect from the brand's iconic record players, such as an iron-coreless direct-drive motor and high-precision S-shaped aluminium tonearm. Still, it comes in at an even more affordable price point than its SL-1500C plug-and-play sibling.
While the iron-coreless direct-drive motor with motor control promises absolutely smooth rotational stability, the SL-100C's solid two-layer platter helps mitigate external vibrations. We are assured that the motor still has the famous "Technics torque" and spins the platter free from cogging.
While it drops the onboard phono stage of the SL-1500C and the strobe and pitch control of the famous SL-1200, the SL-100C is still wrapped in a high-rigidity cabinet featuring a high-damping insulator for thorough shut-out of vibrations, ensuring a smooth vinyl-tracking process, states the manufacturer.
Additionally, on the end of that S-shaped aluminium tonearm is an Audio-Technica VM95C cartridge already fitted. The conical stylus of the VM95C ensures precise tracking and detail retrieval from the vinyl grooves, while the cartridge's technical characteristics mean it is widely compatible with typical Phono MM (moving magnet) inputs found on hi-fi amplifiers, says Technics.
Finally, to save any undue wear-and-tear to that cartridge, the SL-100C also rocks an automatic tonearm lift which can also be turned off should you want to. DJs have also got a new Technics turntable in the SL-1200C.
The SL-100C will be available in Europe from June 2021, RRP £799/ €899.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
