Technics SU-GX70 Integrated Announced Alongside White SL-1500C-W Turntable

Technics has announced its new SU-GX70 streaming amplifier and an upgraded SL-1500C turntable sporting a fresh finish for 2023.

Technics' new SU-GX70 high-spec streaming amplifier extends the brand's Grand Class portfolio, boasting the sonic genes of the acclaimed components collection with comprehensive connectivity options, including, for the first time, HDMI ARC.

Also announced is a refreshed SL-1500C-W direct drive turntable, which sees Technics' beloved fully featured record player decked out in a new stylish matte white finish.

The new SU-GX70 streaming amplifier opens a new chapter for Technics, being the first Technics product to host an HDMI ARC port since the brand's revitalisation in 2014.

We are told that the new amplifier draws on Panasonic's comprehensive expertise in video signal treatment alongside Technics' proprietary full-digital amplification tech to ensure noise and distortion-free playback.

The SU-GX70's claimed high signal-to-noise ratio is partly thanks to a new Twin Power Supply. Meanwhile, Clean Power Clock Generator technology borrowed from Technics' Reference Class components promises high-precision digital signal processing and "supreme audio accuracy".

Utilising the Chromecast platform means access to Spotify, TIDAL, Deezer, Qobuz, and also Amazon Music HD when the OTA update lands. Similarly, Roon Ready is also expected via an update in the not-too-distant future.

The SU-GX70 also boasts Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, and Bluetooth connectivity for seamless wireless network communication, as well as FM, DAB+, and Internet radio support.

As well as its classy new matte white finish, the SL-1500C-W edition deck comes fitted with a pre-mounted Ortofon 2M Red MM pickup cartridge, just requiring you to connect the headshell to the S-shaped aluminium arm via the simple bayonet lock. Meanwhile, an automatic tonearm lift prevents unnecessary wear of the stylus and vinyl at the end of playing a record.

As with the black and silver variants, the white SL-1500C has a conventional phono output with an integrated phono EQ, so it can be connected to powered speakers or directly to an amplifier with no dedicated phono stage.

Naturally, the Technics turntable features an iron-coreless direct drive motor in combination with sophisticated motor control for rotational accuracy. The turntable also benefits from a two-layer platter with a solid two-layer chassis based on aluminium diecast.

The new white version of the SL-1500C will be available from May 2023 for £999, while the Technics SU-GX70 will be available in June 2023, priced at £1,699.99 RRP.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
