ELAC has revealed a larger floorstander in its Concentro S class - the S 509.

ELAC's Concentro S 509 (from €16,000) looks like the S 507 has had a growth spurt. The Concentro S series is a little less otherworldly compared to the large Concentros but are nonetheless distinctively styled.

The S 509's gently angled cabinet, its trapezoidal shape and angular feet with the rear "high-heel effect" certainly catch the eye.

ELAC is particularly proud of the Concentro S 509's stepX-JET: a concentric chassis comprising the new JET 5c tweeter and an aluminium membraned 180mm low/midrange unit that employs AS-XR technology. Interestingly, you get three aluminium Directivity Control Rings (DCRs). This patented technology enables you to swap out the DRCs to tailor the directional characteristics in the mid-frequency range to the conditions in your listening room. ELAC states that the different DCRs are used to optimise the relationship between direct and diffuse sound in the listening zone.

Joining the stepX-JET array are four 180mm side-firing, long-throw woofers for added low-end. ELAC terms this configuration ICD, or Impulse Compensated Design and tells us that it guarantees contoured bass reproduction free of any colouration due to unwanted mechanical vibrations.

That all adds up to a nominal power handling rated at 280 Watts. ELAC also states a frequency range of 22Hz – 50kHz and 88 dB / 2.83V/m sensitivity for the S 509.

The Concentro S 509 is available now in high-gloss lacquer black and white finishes for €16,000 pre pair as well as a premium high-gloss walnut veneer for €17,000 by the end of this month.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
