Astell&Kern; AK HC4 DAC Dongle Declares Digital Audio Remaster Tech

Astell & Kern's HC4 compact DAC features an AKM AK4493S chip and dual headphone output.
Astell&Kern's HC4 DAC replaces, as you have probably already worked out, the popular HC3. The new AK HC4 boasts the AK4493S DAC, a first for the company. The high-performing dongle also features interchangeable USB-C and Lightning connections, 3.5mm and 4.4mm dual output and Digital Audio Remaster technology.
Thanks to the AKM AK44993S at the heart of the HC4, the highly portable DAC supports Native DSD256 and up to 32bit/384kHz alongside A&K's digital audio remaster (DAR) technology – previously only found in the brand's latest digital audio players. We are informed that this DAR tech upsamples the audio sample rate "to go beyond the limits of the source format," which results in, according to A&K, a delicate, analogue-like sound".
Astell&Kern used micro resistors and capacitor parts to achieve the HC4's 29.5x64.5x14.5mm footprint without apparently compromising performance. Carefully selected ultra-small tantalum capacitors are also included to create an optimal audio circuit design. Meanwhile, audio performance is further enhanced by Astell&Kern's unique power management technology that's said to minimise current consumption.
The AK HC4 features Dual Output accomodating 3.5mm and 4.4mm connectors, allowing you to use AK HC4 with most IEMs and headphones. On the subject of connectivity, while the latest smartphones, tablets, and PCs support UAC 2.0 connections, many gaming devices, such as PlayStation and Switch, still exclusively support UAC 1.0 connections. AK HC4 supports both to cater for multi-use scenarios and enables you to enjoy low latency and enhanced sound for an immersive gaming experience.
The AK HC4 inherits Astell&Kern's signature design philosophy, Light and Shadow, through simple yet subtle design elements, further enhanced by its smooth and clean appearance thanks to a unibody structure.
The AK HC4 is available now, priced at £219/ €249 RRP.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
