Arcam AV40 AV Processor

The AV40 wears its skills on its sleeve (well, fascia), from Dolby Atmos to DTS:X to IMAX Enhanced to Dirac Live.

However, it's definitely business around the back with a rear panel sporting 16 pro-grade XLR outputs, 16 single-ended RCA outputs; seven HDMI inputs; three HDMI outputs; 4K (UHD) HDMI 2.0b with HDCP 2.2; and ethernet, RS232 and IR control.

Furthermore, it is also Bluetooth-equipped, integrates an FM/DAB/DAB+ tuner, and employs the ESS 9026PRO audiophile DAC.

Luxury Audio Sales Director, Scott Campbell, told StereoNET:

This exciting announcement marks ARCAM's first new AV models in four years. We have always been about quality, not quantity and users should expect these machines to work beautifully and sound sensational for many years to come. A particular highlight for me is the effortless levels of power achieved with our implementation of Class G technology, while the Class AB models continue to offer stunning value for money. As for the new processor, the way it makes its extensive features so accessible is a testament to our design team's 'must, must be user-friendly' mantra.

AURO-3D Update

The Cambridge-based audio firm has announced that its AVR10, AVR20, AVR30 receivers along with the AV40 AV processor will now be equipped with Auro-3D, an immersive – and fully backwards compatible – technology and format that creates a full, three-dimensional space around the listener, said Arcam today.

The magic of Auro-3D technology is found in its introduction of, and use of, the crucial third and final dimension – the height layer. Utilising recommended speaker configurations that range from Auro 9.1 to Auro 13.1, the updated Arcam models promise to send you into the virtual world of their selected content, regardless of the original format.

The Arcam design team has implemented Auro-3D, combining the Auro-Codec decoder and Auro-Matic up-mixer, into the company's latest AVRs. We are told that this enables an immersive audio experience that accurately reproduces 3D audio for a superior effect. Owners of the upgraded Arcam AVRs just need to add a Blu-ray player, and an Auro-3D configured speaker array.

Auro-3D capable speaker formations do not require ceiling speakers, meaning there's no need to lug out the toolbox. Simply mount speakers above the existing surround layer to enable the necessary vertical stereo field. Here, the Auro-3D-equipped ARCAM models add a 'height layer' directly above the speakers at 30 degrees.

Auro-3D content is already available on Blu-ray discs, and the catalogue continues to grow. Crucially, though, Auro-3D technology also works with 'non-Auro' content. From April 20th, Auro-3D will be available as a firmware update for the ARCAM AVR10, AVR20, AVR30, and AV40.

Stock is now available, however extremely limited due to production and shipping delays due to COVID-19. Check with your local dealer for availability.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
