Cambridge Audio takes it to the max

Cambridge Audio are not one to rest on their laurels, and that is evident with the announcement of their new Aeromax speakers. Debuting at the Hi End Show in Munich this month, the Aeromax range includes radical innovation, improved sound quality and stunning looks.

The Aero range of 2013 has enjoyed great success and universal acclaim, but Cambridge was aiming yet higher. Aeromax steps up another notch and aside from a new high gloss, luxurious finish in gloss black or gloss white, the real difference is the pairing of a full range BMR (Balance Mode Radiator) driver, coupled with a dedicated sub-woofer.

Unlike traditional tweeters, where the crossover between the tweeter and mid/bass woofer typically happens at about 3kHz, with a BMR driver, this crossover shifts all the way down to 250Hz. This means that the BMR driver covers all of the high and mid-range frequencies down to 250Hz, allowing the mid/bass driver to become optimised for efficient bass response, effectively making it a dedicated subwoofer.

The result, according to Cambridge Audio, is "fantastically clear, natural and coherent, high-quality audio".

Two models are available, Aeromax 2 and Aeromax 6, respectively a standmount/bookshelf and a floorstanding model. Both models feature a 2" BMR driver, while the '2' uses one 6.5" woofer, and the '6' uses two 6.5" woofers.

"With Aero, we had a real game changer. But with Aeromax, we have squeezed even more performance out of an already award winning design, and combined it with beautiful aesthetic. You'll only need to listen for a minutes and you'll quickly fall in love with the improved detail, sense of space and across-the-board power of these phenomenal speakers!" Dominic, Acoustics Director at Cambridge Audio, told StereoNET.

Aeromax has also been upgraded further with improved crossover components, internal cabling upgrades, upgraded speaker terminals and increased internal cabinet bracing.

Australian pricing and availability has not been released as yet.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
