Cambridge Flies the Flag

Part of the Azur 851 Series, UK favourite Cambridge Audio adds three dazzling new flagship components to its range.

The trio includes the Azur 851E Pre-amplifier, Azur 851W Power Amplifier, and Azur 851D Digital to Analogue Converter.

These will be ranged alongside the EISA award-winning 851A Integrated Class XS Amplifier and 851C Upsampling DAC, CD Player and Pre-amplifier.

The latest additions gives music lovers a moveable feast of great sounding, nicely priced Cambridge Audio models to audition. Synergy CEO, Philip Sawyer, told StereoNET Cambridge continues to roll out value for money, audiophile grade models that continue to set the pace in a crowded market place.

‘’Cambridge just racks up award after award thanks to its combination of competitive pricing, leading edge circuits and features and of course a compelling sound quality,’’ he said.

The Azur 851E Preamplifier & 851W Power Amplifier

These are a synergistic match that delivers a see-through musical performance with heaps of power on tap.

Unlike other hair-shirt rivals, the new models have a bundle of sensible, real world features such as the 851W's auto-standby mode that detects an incoming signal from the 851E. There also a flexible and configurable trigger, IR outputs and control bus, as well as Balanced XLR outputs on the 851E to make it easy to connect to modern power amps such as the 851W.

The 851E is an authentic analogue preamp that adds nothing to the signal from input to its output stage evidenced by harmonic distortion and noise levels so low that they’re almost impossible to measure.  The 851E also improves over its predecessor, the highly rated 840E, with a more versatile and high-end-friendly range of inputs including three balanced XLR inputs, ideal for modern high-end sources, and an innovative, truly linear volume control circuit.

The 851W Power Amplifier is Cambridge Audio’s best sounding amp yet.  Its superb performance is due to the most refined version of Cambridge Audio’s proprietary, patent-pending Class XD (crossover displacement) system, plus high-end components such as two toroidal transformers and Terrapin impedance buffering modules to deliver serious levels of power with absolute precision.

Azur 851D Digital-Analog Converter

Cambridge Audio’s best DAC ever – this extends the brilliant digital audio handling and upsampling technology of the existing 851C by enhancing key components to make the best even better with improved dimensionality.  A comprehensive range of digital inputs means the 851D is ready for the highest-quality digital audio files from a wide array of potential sources including computers, smartphones, set-up boxes, media streamers, etc.  The result makes digital audio sound truly enjoyable.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
