JBL L100 Classic 75 Limited Edition Speakers Announced

It's JBLs 75th birthday year, and what better way to celebrate it than to release a limited edition of one of its most-loved loudspeakers?

The JBL L100 Classic 75 helps mark 2021 as being the US audio brand's 75th anniversary. With only 750 matched pairs being produced, the new L100 Classic 75 are based on the 2018-released L100 Classic which, obviously, are updated versions of the 1970 L100 original release.

The L100 Classic 75 system includes a set of JS-120 floor stands and, as well as some tasteful aesthetic touches, the anniversary L100 Classics also sport some acoustic tweaks while still maintaining the iconic 70s looks.

The L100 Classic 75 retains the JT025Ti2-4 1-inch Titanium dome tweeter mated to a waveguide with an acoustic lens for optimal integration to the JM125PC-8 5-inch cast-frame, pure-pulp cone midrange driver located directly below, of the L100 Classic. Additionally, the low frequencies remain provided by the JW300SW-8 12-inch cast-frame, white pure-pulp cone woofer operating in a bass-reflex enclosure system tuned via a single, front-firing port tube with flared exit.

However, there's now an improved woofer suspension design and a revised network to include bi-wire capabilities, with dual sets of gold-plated binding posts. Of course, the vertical HF and MF attenuators are still located on the front baffle's upper left side.

The most noticeable change is that the L100 Classic 75 is wrapped in a teak wood veneer gracing all the cabinet's sides. The finishing touch is that unmistakable black Quadrex foam grille, albeit dressed with a gold and black JBL logo.

Special edition badges also grace the front and rear, including a commemorative plaque that sports the principal system engineer, Chris Hagen's signature, along with the production run's unique pair number. Even the wooden crate in which the L100 Classic 75 and matching JS-120 floor stands are supplied get limited-edition artwork.

Jim Garrett, Senior Director, Product Strategy and Planning, Luxury Audio, HARMAN, told StereoNET:

We have seen tremendous success with the latest L100 Classic model that we introduced in the fall of 2018. We thought there was no better way to honour the 75th anniversary of the JBL brand than with an honoured edition version of what is perhaps our most iconic loudspeaker of all time. This one-of-a-kind loudspeaker is destined to become a highly sought-after model by music lovers around the world.

The L100 Classic 75 will be available from May and costs $5,500 a pair with UK pricing yet to be confirmed. It was one of many products unveiled at the HARMAN ExPLORE CES 2021 online event, including the new SA750 integrated streaming amplifier. How good do they look together above?

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
