ICONIC JBL L100 LOUDSPEAKERS GIVEN NEW LIFE

In 1970 JBL released the legendary L100 3-way bookshelf loudspeakers unaware of the success they would enjoy over the next decade becoming JBL's best-selling speaker of all time.

They were not only JBL's all-time best-selling loudspeakers, but many still say they were the best-sounding loudspeaker system of the decade before production ceased in 1978.

It's no wonder someone talented in the product planning department at HARMAN has thought to reintroduce a modern take of the classic.

Today's L100 Classic features the same 1970's-style retro design, complete with vintage JBL styling including a walnut wood frame grille with the iconic Quadrex foam insert in a choice of black, orange, or blue all with a black and bronze JBL logo.

They come finished in a genuine satin walnut veneer with trademark black front and rear panels.

Under the watchful eye of Chris Hagen, the same acoustic system engineer that created the L100T3 in 1988, the fundamental compact 12-inch 3-way design is maintained in the L100 Classic.

According to Hagen, further improvements have been made to the transducers, enclosure tuning, and crossover network design. Nothing less than you would expect from the brand that has access to HARMAN's design centre and the world’s most advanced acoustic engineering resources in Northridge, California.

The L100 Classic uses an all-new JT025Ti1 25mm Titanium dome tweeter mated to a waveguide with an acoustic lens "for optimal integration to the JM125PC 5-inch (125mm) cast-frame, pure-pulp cone midrange driver located directly below."

The vertical HF and MF transducer arrangement is slightly offset to the right of the woofer below, with HF and MF attenuators located on the upper left of the front baffle.

Low frequencies are delivered by the 1200FE 12-inch cast-frame, white pure-pulp cone woofer operating in a bass-reflex enclosure system that is tuned via a single, front-firing port tube with flared exit.

Measuring 637mm H x 390mm W x 372mm D, the L100 Classic can be oriented either vertically or horizontally, and matching optional black metal floor stands are also available ($649/pr).

Our friends over at StereoNET AU were given the exclusive opportunity recently to have a listen along with select specialist retailers. We can report that dealers that appreciated the significance of this release and took the time to listen, agreed that the L100 Classic is everything you would expect from the legendary JBL brand. We predict the L100 Classic will be remembered once more as one of JBL's success stories, nearly fifty years on from the original release.

Available in October 2018, UK pricing for the JBL L100 Classic has not been confirmed yet.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
