MELCO LAUNCHES THE N100 MUSIC LIBRARY AT A GREAT PRICE POINT

Melco has just introduced their Model N100. While staying true to Melco's high-performance digital music library systems the company is offering the N100 at a whole new price point.

The N100 uses the same extreme low-noise high precision digital music data flow of the existing Melco series. Designed from the start as an audio-specific device, the N100 uses no standard IT components or PC parts.

A new low-profile mainboard uses the same RISC processor and architecture as the N1Z series. Furthermore, the N100 retains twin Ethernet ports with the dedicated Ethernet Player port connecting directly to the network player without an intervening data switch. The results of all that is very low noise with precise data management and packet order and timing are maintained.

Internal storage is 2TB HDD. Easily expandable by either IT USB HDD or the Melco E100 to maintain sound quality. A USB connected DAC allows the N100 to perform as a self-contained local HiRes Digital Music player.
You get support for Data rates up to 32bit 384kHz and Octo DSD. Tracks also benefit from support for Gapless and Melco Markerless DSD.

Control of the USB-DAC player is from the new Melco App, from the front panel, or from approved third-party RF Remote handset. The N100 will operate with both USB DAC and also Ethernet connected player even without connection to a data network – standalone Isolated Mode.

CD import is simple with either Melco D100 external CD loader or IT grade Optical drive for less demanding use.

Alan Ainslie, General manager at Melco, told StereoNET:

"It is a shame that so many who could enjoy the benefits of digital music from a device such as Melco are put off either because of price or lack of space. N100 addresses both of these concerns.

The new price point is interesting – the competition is really what I call ‘a PC in a box' which can never match the sound quality of a Melco and can never match the Melco for ease of use.

Melco is built in Japan, initially for a market that does not easily accept computers, so N100 offers extreme simplicity of setup (language, time zone and you are ready to go) as well as extreme convenience and simplicity of operation. Japanese Audiophiles are also extremely demanding in terms of sound quality and accept no compromises. N100 delivers on this expectation with results that belie both the cost and the simplicity.

I almost forgot – this is just so beautifully engineered – it delights before it is even switched on!"

The Melco N100 is available from the end of September in the UK, and Europe priced at €2000 / £1800.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
