MoFi Electronics SourcePoint 10 Loudspeakers Are Company’s First

MoFi Electronics enters the loudspeaker market with its SourcePoint 10 "cost no object"  two-way standmounters.

MoFi Electronics is the turntable, phono stage and cartridge-making offshoot of the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs record label, which now can add loudspeakers to its list of offerings with the announcement of the SourcePoint 10.

These new standmount loudspeakers are apparently the result of a "cost-no-object" project aiming to deliver the best sound quality possible. MoFi states that it has utilised proprietary technology for the driver and motor, with the SourcePoint 10 benefitting from a custom 10-inch (25cm) concentric driver and a 1.25-inch (3cm) soft dome tweeter fitted in the bass driver, which takes over at 1.6kHz.

MoFi says that the concentric driver's diameter was chosen as it's the ideal size for "minimising cone movement while producing deep bass". Meanwhile, Chief Speaker Designer Andrew Jones (KEF, TAD, Pioneer, Elac) opted for a paper pulp mix for the cone's construction as it "optimises resonance behaviour and works well with the tweeter waveguide". Finally, the tweeter has a large-diameter voice coil, and wide-roll surround said to help extend the high and low-frequency responses.

MoFi proudly states that SourcePoint 10 is driven by a "Twin-Drive" magnet structure. They say this creates a fully symmetrical magnetic field that "eliminates flux modulation for extremely low intermodulation distortion". The upshot here is that it helps the speakers deliver "exceptional clarity".

Andrew Jones told StereoNET:

It is not enough to simply optimise the frequency response of the woofer and tweeter. It is also critically important to minimise distortion in the motor structure of the drive unit. If the motor has distortion, it will generate new frequencies outside of the original signal. We have been very deliberate with the design of the motor to reduce these distortions.

The SourcePoint 10 has a mid-century design aesthetic with the multi-faceted baffle designed to reduce diffraction as well as looking pretty cool. The speaker cabinet features a two-inch thick front baffle and one-inch-thick MDF panels wrapped in real wood veneer finished in satin walnut or black ash.

Furthermore, the cabinet has a fantastic claimed 50 litres of volume, which is more than most standmounters and should translate to plenty of bass extension down to the manufacturer's listed 42Hz alongside efficiency, reinforced by MoFi's stated 91dB sensitivity going into 8 ohms. The SourcePoint 10 should be easily driven by most amplifiers, then.

The MoFi SourcePoint 10 speakers are available from January 2023, priced at £4,500, with the optional stands costing £550.

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
