Pro-Ject's new T2 turntable duo bring more choice to the range for more traditional audio systems.

Following the original T2 concept of Pro-Ject's T2 W wireless streaming deck, the T2 and the T2 Super Phono plug-and-play turntables continue the Austrian firm's turntable legacy.

Both models share the same overall design, internal circuitry and general specifications. The main difference between these new turntables is that the T2 Super Phono, as you might have already expected, has a built-in phono stage that is said to be "specially designed to the same standard of performance as many more expensive dedicated phono stages".

You can, however, bypass the phono stage if you later want to use a moving coil (MC) cartridge and/or upgrade to an external pre-amp.

Pro-Ject is convinced that the "T2 enters the ring as a new challenger in the midrange audio market" thanks to "a host of audiophile design elements" whilst keeping true to the T series' focus of being to set-up and use.

Both decks feature a belt drive system powered by a "precision-speed" AC motor mounted inside the wooden plinth, which has been expanded for "better stability and resilience."

Meanwhile, Pro-Ject's engineered sub-platter is fitted into a stainless-steel main bearing, spinning the zero-resonance glass platter with "absolute stability." A rocker switch lets you choose between 33 and 45 rpm.

The T2 models also sport a new single-piece aluminium nine-inch tonearm at the end of an "improved" low-friction gimble bearing assembly alongside an anti-skate mechanism promising improved accuracy and sonic reliability. The arm comes loaded with the respected Sumiko Rainier moving magnet cartridge. We really enjoyed the Wellfleet MM cartridge from the same range, and if you want, you can upgrade the Rainier later to the pricier Wellfleet simply and cost-effectively by swapping out the stylus.

The core construction of the T2's plinth is plastic-free and designed without internal hollow spaces, avoiding unwanted vibrations that could affect audio playback. The vibration-absorbing feet further mitigate bad vibes.

The T2 and T2 Super Phono are supplied with a removable dust cover, a felt mat and Pro-Ject's RCA cable for connecting to an existing hi-fi system.

The new Pro-Ject T2 turntable is priced at £479, while the T2 Super Phono costs £559. Both models are available in gloss black, satin white, and walnut.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
