We at SNUK are fans of Roon and, since its introduction in 2015, Roon has transformed the experience of browsing music for many others.

We particularly like the addition of artist photos, credits, bios, reviews, lyrics, tour dates and composers which are all located automatically within the software and then made surfable on the friendly interface.

Additionally, the fact that it also gives us a single point to access our networked music collection, TIDAL and Qobuz. Add in its multi-room, multi-user smarts, bit-perfect playback, DSD and PCM upsampling, multichannel playback and signal path display, Roon has become invaluable to us.

Updated Roon Nucleus and Nucleus+ Servers

Now, Roon Labs has told us that it has updated its Nucleus and Nucleus+ servers which were released in 2018.

The servers were and still are, built on Intel Core i3 (Nucleus) and i7 (Nucleus+) processors and are said to deliver the ultimate Roon experience, regardless of your environment.

Boasting a purpose-built OS for rock-solid performance and a unique set of features, they have quickly established themselves in both the high-performance home audio and custom install markets as the ideal core for any digital audio system.

Connectivity comes by way of a pair of USB 3.0 ports which can be used for hard drive and/or DAC hook-ups and two HDMI ports for stereo and multi-channel audio output.

The latest Nucleus and Nucleus+ retain the specifications of the previous version, but benefit from new production facilities, a facelift and some revised features.
 
Nucleus and Nucleus+ units are now being manufactured at a new production facility in California, USA, and in the move, Roon Labs have taken the opportunity to revise the chassis into a wider, deeper and shallower form. However, the units retain the same passive cooling system as the previous iteration.

The internal layout has also been changed to allow for internal SATA drives up to 15mm deep (the previous version could only accommodate 9mm drives), and the inclusion of a second HDMI output on the back panel. Also, the packaging used with the new version is more eco-friendly.

Moreover, in implementing these changes, Roon Labs have managed to retain the same price as the original version, and stock is available across the UK from September 2019.
