Sonus Faber Releases Lilium Loudspeaker

Respected northern Italian loudspeaker builder Sonus Faber has released the Lilium, a truly high end loudspeaker, incorporating many features from the company's flagship Aida. This 3.5-way model stands a proud 1.6 metres tall and each weighs over one hundred kilograms. We first heard about Lilium back in May, however Australian pricing and availability was not known at that stage.

Fitted with a damped apex dome 28mm tweeter, to which is afixed a wooden acoustic labyrinth, its sweet tops reach from 2,500 hertz out to 35,000 hertz. Like the 180mm midrange, the tweeter is 'decoupled' from the main enclosure to eliminate vibration-induced colourations in the sound.

Three 180mm woofers deliver frequencies below 250 hertz. With its own separate enclosure -- decoupled, also, from the rest of the enclosure -- a 260mm 'infra' woofer comes into operation below 80 hertz. Tuned with a passive radiator, a level adjustment allows room matching.

The enclosure itself features walls with varying thicknesses, curved to dampen resonances. Specially designed internal structures not only further strengthen the enclosure but also control unwanted vibrations.

The highest quality components, including Mundorf Supreme capacitors and Jantzen inductors, have been assembled for the crossovers, which have been designed to optimise the phase and level response of the drivers.

It isn't surprising that the Lilium offers a frequency response all the way down to 20 hertz. They are also relatively sensitive, with an output of 92dBSPL for a 2.83 volt input, yet are rated at up to 800 watts of power handling.

Available in Walnut and Red, the Sonus Faber Lilium speakers come with a five year warranty and a recommended retail price of $89,999.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
