STEINWAY LYNGDORF’S MODEL D IS A MASTERPIECE

Steinway Lyngdorf's Model D is described as a flagship masterpiece and the first and best of its kind.

These accolades come from Steinway Lyngdorf, the brand that designed and crafted this deeply impressive $449,999 loudspeaker system.

But the superlatives have to be admired because the Model D has the credentials to back up the hype.

The Model D is a full range floor standing dipole speaker system with a vast difference from other speakers: stand close while it's in full flight and you’ll hear sound coming from the back and front of this speaker.

This unique design is explained by the famous, Steinway name.

Steinway and Sons have made impeccable and sought after high-end pianos for what seems like an eternity. Those back and frontal cabinet vibrations are engineered to give this speaker perfect interaction with a listening room, just like a Steinway piano’s dulcet resonances create ear-pleasing sound of the purest quality.

Peter Lyngdorf, a veteran Danish audio equipment manufacturer, took his inspiration from the way a Steinway piano works and sounds within a room. Adding his decades of audio experience into the mix has resulted in the Model D.

The craftsmanship that goes into each Model D is on a monumental scale. It takes more than 170 hours of precision machining to complete the baffle that is milled from solid blocks of aluminium, chosen because it is a totally solid platform to mount hard-working, powerful drivers.

An active loudspeaker system, the Model D’s inbuilt amps provide 400 watts for each of two channels of power.

Moreover, this speaker is fully digital and this the brand says, makes it immune to analogue sound degradation because all signal processing is handled entirely in the digital domain.

The Model D is designed to work with all the other optional components in the brand’s range.

It can be paired with the brand’s iconic head unit or the more discreet SP-1 stereo processor, along with the Model P200 surround sound processor.

The head unit is a popular optional extra for many lucky buyers. It’s a substantial component standing more than three feet tall. It’s also exquisitely built. The large volume wheel, for example, is manufactured from 1kg of gold-plated brass and it’s mounted on precision-machined Swiss bearings.

This head unit carries an integrated CD player that is also substantially crafted and weighs 4 kg.

The Model D speaker system will work beautifully in a huge range of listening rooms thanks to its RoomPerfect technology which is designed to adapt the sound system to the room, rather than the other way around.

RoomPerfect uses a 3D measuring system to map out a room’s acoustics and optimises the Model D’s sound within it. So regardless of a room’s shape or size, or the furniture, loudspeaker location or listening position, the Model D will always sound grand.

The Model D is 205.8cms high, 46.4cm wide and 79.7cm deep. Each speaker weighs a staggering 174kg.

Steinway Lyngdorf has just unveiled the beautiful Walnut finish option shown here, but the Model D is also available in high gloss black with gold or chrome accents, along with other custom colours and wood finishes.

When you're spending just shy of a half-a-million dollars, it's nice to have a choice.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
