TWO NEW PHONO AMPLIFIERS FROM CAMBRIDGE AUDIO

UK boutique brand, Cambridge Audio is making hay while the sun shines on turntable sales.

Its bountiful audio harvest includes two thoroughly sophisticated, but nicely priced phono amps that predictably are going to make the brand much dough.

Called the Solo and the Duo, the pair is superbly finished as you’ll read and moreover, just as well presented thanks to really clever and useful features.

Cambridge Audio Solo

The Solo is a model built solely with moving magnet cartridges in mind. No bad thing since the majority of new turntable buyers will shop for an entry to mid-level vinyl spinner.

Their budget will also see these newbies opting for a moving magnet cartridge rather than a pricier moving coil model with non-user replaceable stylus assembly.

The Duo will handle both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. It has a built-in headphone amplifier as well along with a volume control.

Cambridge has given both the Solo and the Duo a Balance control. It’s on the rear of both models and if you’re wondering why, spare a thought to the build quality of some of the beer-budget moving magnet cartridges.

The Balance control can be used to trim the difference in channel output levels. A problem that could arise with cheap ‘n cheerful cartridges.

Both new phono amps are equipped with subsonic filters.

Cambridge Audio's local distributor, Synergy Audio, have told us that they Solo and Duo will be available in February 2018, but pricing has not yet been confirmed.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
