An Iconic Name Returns to Market with Encel Gelati Bookshelf Speakers

In 1958, and at just 24 years old, Alex Encel built his first stereo system. His name would prove to be a foundation of the Australian hi-fi landscape, and now, more than sixty years later, that name and legacy continue.
While more than half a century has passed since Alex built his first pair of speakers by hand in Melbourne, Encel speakers return under the watchful eye of son Sam with the announcement of its new and appropriately named range, Gelati.
While not the first product in the revised brand lineup, Gelati follows last year's release of Harald, a versatile Bluetooth streamer offering the ability to transmit music from your phone to your stereo wirelessly.
The latest release, Encel Gelati, is a bookshelf speaker offered in a variety of uniquely flavoured lacquer and woodgrain cabinets, including Birch Black, Vanilla, Caramel Walnut, and Pistachio. Additionally, they're conveniently adaptable to the surrounds of your listening space, with twelve magnetic grilles in shades such as Eucalyptus Green, Ocean Blue, Lemon Yellow and Coffee Brown. Swapping them out takes seconds, allowing you to choose and change your speakers' appearance. Encel Gelati speakers are supplied without grilles, so you can choose your flavour and personalise their look.
The 2-way vented-box standmount speaker utilises a 5-inch Kevlar cone, and 1-inch soft dome tweeter, is rated at 25-100W with 86dB sensitivity, and 101dB Peak SPL. Frequency response is quoted as 50Hz or 20kHz (+/-3dB). Gelati weighs in at 8.52kg/pair, and each cabinet measures 301mm x 174mm x 222mm (HWD).
Sam Encel, Director of Interdyn Brands, told StereoNET:
Gelati were tuned based on extensive listening tests here in Melbourne by the Encel team. We're thrilled with an overall balance that makes them musically dexterous across many genres. They confidently serve up sweet highs, decadent mids, and a low-end dripping with punch and authority.
In a nod to the environment, Gelati speakers are packaged with a minimum of disposable materials and manuals, with instructions and information available online at the brand's website.
A defining trait of the Encel brand is an artistic collaboration with Melbourne-based illustrator Alice Oehr designing the Gelati's cardboard packaging. Gelati speakers are manufactured with sturdy, durable materials like MDF and kevlar, which means the "gift of great music will continue for years down the line."
Sam continued:
It's really special to be continuing dad's work and releasing modern hi-fi products over 60 years since he pioneered the industry in Australia. That the principles of quality sound have endured in that time shows how sustainable a great music system is. Our fun new speakers are excellent value, designed in Melbourne, and will look and sound beautiful in anyone's home. We hope you enjoy the Gelati. They're only the beginning.
Encel Gelati speakers are now available in Australia, and New Zealand later this month. They will retail for AU$549/NZ$629. Premium coloured magnetic grilles are available separately for AU$79/NZ$89 a pair, with Black or White magnetic grilles available for AU$49/NZ$59. Gelati are covered by a five-year manufacturer's warranty from the date of purchase.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
