Atlas Cables Hyper AES/EBU Benefits From Mavros Design

Atlas Cables has leveraged the digital experience and design techniques gained in developing its Mavros performance AES/EBU to create its new Hyper cable.
The Hyper AES/EBU from Atlas Cables is the new balanced digital audio cable for the Scottish brand's Hyper range.
Atlas Cables Managing Director, Kevin Kelly, told StereoNET:
We spend a huge amount of time developing new technology for our flagship cables, always with the goal of offering as transparent a cable as possible. Therefore, it is always a benefit when we can utilise some of that design philosophy further down the range.
The Hyper AES/EBU cable carries a balanced version of the standard S/PDIF digital audio protocol. Apparently, one of the main challenges is to keep as close as possible to the 110-ohm characteristic impedance specification to minimise cable reflections and the resulting time-based jitter induction. To this end, Atlas chose to use a balanced pair of silver-plated OFC conductors enclosed within a multi-level screen constructed from Aluminium Mylar film and OFC woven braid. Here, both conductors are wrapped individually with what Atlas tells us is a highly efficient microporous PTFE dielectric tape. Finally, the cable is manufactured using a super-soft cotton anti-vibration filler.
The cable is then terminated using the same reliable, low contact resistance balanced XLR plug as Atlas's Mezzo XLR cable.
The Atlas Cables Hyper AES/EBU cable is available in lengths from 0.5m to 3.0m, with prices starting at £185 going up to £385. A 1.5m cable costs £265.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
