AUDEARA’S HEADPHONES ARE GOOD FOR YOUR HEARING

How often are personalised headphones designed by a group of doctors and engineers? Not often, we’d wager.

Moreover, the Audeara A-01 has a built-in hearing test, and according to the company, it’s the only in-built hearing test in personal headphones to win endorsement from Australian audiologists.

New data reveals hearing loss costs the national economy about $15.9 billion and affects nearly 3.6 million Australians. Alarmingly, data released in August by the Hearing Care Industry Australia (HCIA) shows in more than a third of cases, hearing loss is preventable.

HCIA’s figures show 7.8 million Australians will have hearing loss by 2060. Young people aged 12 to 35 years are very much at risk with up to 50 percent of this group set to develop hearing loss after five years of exposure to live music.

Audeara CEO and co-founder, Dr James Fielding believes it's dangerous to ramp up volume levels on devices, but people keep winding the wick up to the max unaware they were suffering from hearing loss. He said:

Audeara’s headphones are unique thanks to the in-built, sophisticated, laboratory grade hearing test run by app and compatible with any smartphone that lets users map the sound output of the headphones with their hearing.

The A-01s will identify if people have any hearing loss in either ear and use this information to create an optimised acoustic landscape.

The A-01’s calibration is stored in the headphones and works with any signal source they’re linked to. This feature allows for individually tailored sound for making phone calls, watching movies and listening to music. They can apparently also be worn with hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Perhaps not quite as unique as Audeara would have us believe though. Beyerdynamic's Aventho Wireless headphones also test your hearing via its smartphone app, tailoring the frequency response according to the individual's hearing profile. Aventho Wireless features the latest tech, wireless and Bluetooth profiles, from one of the biggest names in the headphones world and sells for $599 RRP.

According to Audeara, they've sold more than 2000 A-01s. Good news for the Aussie brand. They cost $499 per pair and can be bought directly from Audeara.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
