BLUOS BREAKS FREE

BluOS, the multi-room audio technology that found life bundled within the Bluesound streaming audio product range has now taken on its own identity.

Canadian parent company, Lenbrook, invested the big bucks early on to develop their own platform for the Bluesound range, in-house.

BluOS is a wireless ecosystem that uses a home network to connect more than one enabled device and play your music in perfect sync, or different music simultaneously, anywhere in the house. Using advanced technologies, BluOS can wirelessly transmit lossless music up to 24-bit/192kHz at lightning-fast speeds with no lag and zero loss in sound quality.

Whether it was all part of the master plan or an after-thought is anyone’s guess, but by its own merit and stripes, BluOS has emerged as a champion as a multi-room and audio streaming platform.

In reviews on StereoNET we often discuss that a product in this category is only as good as it’s control app, and further, the underlying architecture.

While other audio brands have opted to use a third-party for their control app such as DTS Play-Fi, or the UPnP protocol and the many apps that will work with it, the user experience is often left compromised and certainly out of the hands of the hardware manufacturer.

Lenbrook likely understood this from the get-go and would not leave this critical aspect in the hands of the gods.

As BluOS rolled out their latest update last month, not only were the smallest of bugs squashed in the release, but the user interface, that most critical aspect, was once again polished for the best user experience possible.

It’s not only the thousands of Bluesound customers that have enjoyed the platform. It seems other manufacturers were watching too.

At an exclusive launch at the Munich High End Show in Germany last month, StereoNET were treated to a preview of a new product from DALI, the Callisto. You can read more about that here.

What took everyone by surprise was the inclusion of BluOS as the underlying platform that makes the Callisto ‘tick’. The first manufacturer outside Lenbrook’s own brands, which includes Bluesound, PSB and NAD, DALI obviously sees the value, performance, and overall experience that BluOS offers.

Only weeks later a new website appeared at bluos.net – a dedicated site to the BluOS platform.

With existing integration that allows BluOS to work with control brands including Control4, Crestron, RTI, Push and URC, the clear statement on the bluOS.net website hints where it is now heading:

All BluOS Enabled systems from our partners allows music lovers and custom integrators to seamlessly connect, manage and control networked music in a connected home with a smartphone, tablet, desktop or dedicated CI controller.

BluOS Enabled products will have the underlying tech built right into the device. Whereas, BluOS Ready products will be modular by design and afford the ability to have a module plugged in, enabling existing products to be upgraded later.

Another of BluOS’ key advantages is there compatibility with another champion in the music library management arena, Roon. StereoNET understands that any BluOS enabled product will also be compatible with Roon.

While DALI may be the first third-party manufacturer to embrace BluOS, we’d suggest they certainly won’t be the last.

While it seems like very early days for BluOS right now, the platform has already endured many years of development and refinement.

As BluOS comes of age, we look forward to watching it bloom as new brand partners come onboard.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
