Fyne Audio F704SP (Special Production) Loudspeaker Launched at High End

Fyne Audio's F704SP refines and upgrades the original floorstanding loudspeaker to another level.

Scotland's Fyne Audio announces that the F704SP merges "the dynamic might of the F704 with the refinement and articulation of the F1 Series," which, says the British speaker designer, results in "the perfect musical storm."

Combining the authoritative power and dynamics of the Applause Award-winning original F704 with refinements and sonic enhancements trickled down from the elite F1 Series, the F704SP represents Fyne's latest statement in contemporary loudspeaker design.

The F704SP is based on Fyne Audio's signature 300mm IsoFlare point source driver that integrates a 12-inch multi-fibre bass/midrange cone with Fyne's signature 3-inch (75mm) titanium dome compression tweeter time-aligned to the larger cone at the driver's centre. This is driven by multiple motor systems featuring a neodymium magnet for the HF and a large ferrite for the main cone.

We're told that the reason for the different magnet choices is that the conductive nature of the neodymium magnet in the HF system significantly reduces distortion by damping voice coil inductance losses, resulting in exceptionally accurate frequency response and improved high-frequency performance. Meanwhile, the substantial ferrite motor ensures the larger low-frequency cone offers exceptional excursion range for the driver while tightly controlling the voice coil, resulting in incredibly tight, fast, dynamic bass.

To further extend the lower frequency response and enable high sensitivity (96dB/W) of the overall loudspeaker, the F704SP integrates a second 300mm/12-inch bass driver, featuring the same lightweight multi-fibre cone, ferrite motor and FyneFlute roll surround as its partnering IsoFlare.

Initially pioneered by Fyne Audio on the F1-10, the F704SP also includes a downward-firing port paired with Fyne Audio's BassTrax Tractrix diffuser system to deliver a 360-degree low-frequency wavefront.

The F704SP also benefits from "a substantially upgraded crossover network." Redesigned through computer modelling and listening sessions, this crossover now incorporates top-shelf components such as ClarityCap high-grade polypropylene capacitors and Vishay high-power military-grade thick film resistors in the high-frequency signal path.

Additionally, Fyne Audio has applied its proprietary cryogenic treatment to the complete crossover assembly at its dedicated in-house DCT facility in the new Scottish factory. Furthermore, Neotech PC-OCC wiring is used throughout and is renowned for its exceptional clarity and transparent signal transfer characteristics.

The curved F704SP cabinet is crafted from pressed high-density European birch plywood and features extensive internal bracing; the substantial enclosure offers unsurpassed rigidity for its large internal volume. At the rear, you will find gold-plated WBT Nextgen terminals.

As a significant upgrade on the F704, the F704SP's entire plinth and BassTrax assembly are machined to the same exacting specification as the F1-12S. Here, you have a heavyweight sandwich of aluminium plates, advanced tractrix cone engineering and Fyne's large M12 threaded metal cone feet. The plinth assembly acts as an ultra-rigid radial low-frequency wave guide for the porting system. Moreover, the plinth design provides exceptional stability for each 71.5kg loudspeaker with optimal floor coupling.

The F704SP boasts a frequency response extending from a deep 22Hz to a clear 26kHz, peak power handling capabilities reaching up to 600 watts, and a high sensitivity of 96dB/W.

In addition to the piano gloss black, gloss white, and gloss walnut finishes of the original F704, the F704SP is also available in a hand-finished satin-sheen real wood walnut veneer.

The Fyne Audio F704SP is available now priced at £19,999.99 / $25,999.99 / €23,999.99 per pair.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
