LG G8 THINQ HANDSET COULD BE THE ULTIMATE AUDIOPHILE’S SMARTPHONE

LG’s upcoming G8 ThinQ smartphone is shaping up to be the ultimate handset for audiophiles, with the company this week revealing a truckload of intriguing sonic-related features – including a vibrating OLED screen.

The G8 ThinQ will be the first phone to come with LG’s Crystal Sound OLED (CSO for short) technology, which transforms the screen into a vibrating speaker. With the entire surface acting as a diaphragm, CSO reportedly delivers both impressive volume and enhanced clarity; it can even act in tandem with the phone’s dedicated bottom-firing speaker to produce proper stereo sound.

This dual-purpose display isn’t the only audio aspect of the G8 ThinQ worth noting, however.

It will also come with a Hi-Fi Quad DAC and 3.5mm headphone jack allowing it to output high-quality sound; a Boombox Speaker function that produces a more bass-heavy sound when the phone is placed on a hard flat surface; MQA lossless streaming support (that’ll reportedly be available even to those who don’t have unlimited data plans); and DTS:X 3D Surround Sound, which aims to create a 7.1-channel effect with or without headphones.

The LG G8 ThinQ will be officially launched on 24th February at an event preceding Mobile World Congress, where the company will reveal details about other features and specifications. But in terms of audio, at least, it looks set to stand out even among high-end rival flagship models from Apple, Samsung, Huawei and Sony.

Stay tuned for updates.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
