LG SERVES UP SIX SOUNDBARS FOR 2019

LG has announced that it’ll bring no fewer than six new soundbars to the Australian market this year.

Most promising are three high-end models: the 550W SL10YG ($1,699, available April), 500W SL9YG ($1,499, available June) and 360W SL8YG ($1,099, available April). Each of these comes with built-in Google Assistant allowing for voice control, not just for the soundbar but for connected smart home devices including televisions, lighting and heating. Thanks to the Wi-Fi on board, these bars can also stream audio from the likes of Spotify and Deezer.

The three premium models support Dolby Atmos and DTS:X directional audio, and have DSPs tweaked by engineers at legendary British hi-fi company Meridian Audio. Meridian’s Upmix technology, which aims to create an all-enveloping multi-channel sound stage from a two-channel source, is also on board.

Further down the range, you’ll find the 420W SL7Y ($799, available April), 400W SL5Y ($549, available March) and 300W SL4Y ($399, available March). The SL7Y has Wi-Fi and is Google Assistant-compatible (it just doesn’t have the tech built-in), while the SL5Y and SL4Y have Bluetooth for streaming purposes, and all three models have DTS Virtual:X tech.

Each of the soundbars comes with its own wireless subwoofer to provide low-end audio muscle. And, thanks to LG’s optional SPK8-S Rear Speaker Kit ($199, available March), it’s possible to add two dedicated wireless rear speakers with a total of 140W of power to any of the three premium Wi-Fi-equipped soundbars.

Angus Jones, General Manager of Marketing at LG Electronics Australia told StereoNET at the launch this week:

Our partnership with Meridian means we can deliver amazing audio performance to Australian households – and really provide Aussies with a fully packaged premium viewing experience. The 2019 line-up of LG Sound Bars has an additional benefit with the convenience of Google Assistant integration as well,

He continued:

It’s incredible how just from just one simple wireless soundbar – that anyone can set up – an incredible virtual surround sound experience is achieved.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
