MARANTZ ANNOUNCES SR5014 & SR6014 ULTRA HD RECEIVERS

Marantz wasn’t about to be outdone by its fellow Sound United brand with its the impending release of Denon’s newest AVR-X3600H AV Receiver. The announcement had barely hit our desks when Marantz followed suit, announcing two new AV Receivers, also due for release in September.

The SR6014 is a 9.2 channel AVR, whereas the SR5014 is a 7.2 channel AV Receiver, rated at 180 watts per channel. The SR5014 will support both 7.2 and 5.2.2 speaker configurations, with the SR6014 being able to support 7.2.2 and 5.2.4 speaker configurations via its internal amplifiers.

Marantz’s new SR6014 features discrete high-current amplifiers on all channels with a quoted power rating of 185W per channel. The SR6014 also features Marantz’s proprietary Hyper Dynamic Amplification Module (HDAM) which is claimed to provide optimal fidelity and dynamic range, in addition to low impedance drive capability.

Another notable difference is the fact that the SR6014 can be expanded for 7.2.4 and even 5.2.6 speaker configurations with the addition of a stereo power amplifier.

The SR5014 and SR6014 both support the latest multi-dimensional surround formats including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and DTS Virtual:X with the SR6014 adding IMAX Enhanced to its capabilities. Both receivers include Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization technology, adding virtualised height and surround effects from stereo and surround content with fewer speakers.

Marantz’s new AV Receivers are equipped with eight HDMI inputs and three HDMI outputs, all of which are HDCP 2.3 compatible.  They support a range of different video formats including 4K Ultra HD 60Hz video, High Dynamic Range (HDR10), Dolby Vision, Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) 4:4:4 Pure Color sub-sampling and BT.2020 pass-through.

The SR5014 and SR6014 also support eARC allowing uncompressed and object-based audio from the AVR to a display via an HDMI cable. Likewise, both receivers feature ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) for Xbox One owners with compatible TV’s.

Music streaming is supported with inbuilt HEOS technology. HEOS allows users to access an extensive range of streaming services including Spotify, Tidal, TuneIn and Internet Radio. Both units are compatible with voice assistants, including Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Siri. Apple fans can also result assured knowing the SR6014 and SR5014 supports both AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth.

Amongst the SR5014 and SR6014’s more musical talents are their ability to decode up to 24-bit/192-kHz ALAC, FLAC and WAV lossless files, in addition to DSD 2.8/5.6MHz tracks. Vinyl lovers can also connect their turntables to the included phono stage, which features Marantz’s HDAM technology.

The SR5014 is equipped with Audyssey MultEQ XT room correction whereas the SR6014 features Audyssey MultEQ XT32 room correction. While both versions of Audyssey support Dynamic Volume and Dynamic EQ, XT32 adds both LFC and SubEQ HT to its list of features. XT32 also adds a 512 step filter resolution giving it further precision over the XT version.

Marantz’s 2019 SR models also feature HDMI Multiple Input Assign, which allows users to listen to multiple audio sources while keeping the same video content on screen. Furthermore, the new series features HDMI Auto Input Rename, which automatically renames HDMI inputs to their corresponding source devices.

A new DSP downmix will allow owners to playback native multichannel audio in the room that the AVR is physically located while listening to the same source in a second zone in stereo. This same downmix can also be sent directly to HEOS connected devices.

Marantz says a new firmware update coming towards the end of the year will allow Bluetooth Headphone to connect to compatible SR AV Receivers via a “Bluetooth Out” feature.

The SR6014 is also capable of upscaling sources to 1080p and 4K Ultra HD (50/60 Hz). Unlike it’s smaller sibling, the SR6014 also features gold plated terminals and an aluminium front panel with trapdoor design.

Available in black finish only the SR6014 and SR5014 will be available from late September for $2,570 RRP and $1,780 RRP respectively.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s.
