MartinLogan Motion Foundation Series Promises Performance & Value

MartinLogan's Motion Foundation series loudspeakers have been designed to put high-performance technologies within reach of a wider audience while maintaining the brand's commitment to an uncompromising audio experience, says the Kansas-based manufacturer.

Following the lessons learned during the development of MartinLogan's Motion XT and Motion series products, Motion Foundation takes into account anechoic measurements, in-room testing, and blind listening tests to produce a line of speakers that "sets high benchmarks for performance and value within their class", according to Andrew Lindsey, Product Manager at MartinLogan.

The MartinLogan Motion Foundation Series comprises five new rear-ported models, two floorstanders in the Motion Foundation F2 flagship and more compact F1, two bookshelf speakers in the B2 and B1, and the C1 centre channel.

The Motion Foundation Series sees the introduction of the company's Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter S. This uses a folded thin film material to achieve a greater surface area in a compact space. MartinLogan states that this translates to incredible detail and clarity.

Additionally, we're told that Controlled Dispersion tech optimises room acoustics and minimises the detrimental effects commonly associated with speaker placement. Focusing the sound into the listening area promises increased flexibility, clarity, and enhanced placement options, regardless of the room's design.

Furthermore, the brand adds that its Folded Motion Waveguide further enhances the Controlled Dispersion of the Gen2 Folded Motion Tweeter S by avoiding performance-robbing room reflections. The upshot here is that we're told to expect a more consistent sound across a wider sweet spot.

The Motion Foundation Series incorporates new Aluminum Midrange and Bass Drivers, featuring trickle-down technology from the recently released Motion XT and Motion Series. Also, the centre channel features an Anti-Lobing 2.5-way design, which is said to minimise tonality alteration commonly found in 2-way centre channel designs without the larger cabinet requirements typically associated with 3-way configurations. This should result in more furniture-friendly sizing, clearer dialogue and higher accuracy.

The series flagship F2 pairs the Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter S and 5.5-inch midrange driver with three custom-designed 6.5-inch aluminium woofers and offers a quoted 36 Hz-23 kHz ± 3 dB frequency range and 92 dB sensitivity from its 3-way design which crosses over at 330Hz and 3,600Hz. Meanwhile, The F1 offers a 3-way floorstanding solution in a tighter footprint. Here the G2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter S works in tandem with the Folded Motion Waveguide and custom 5.5-inch aluminium drivers resulting in a claimed 41 Hz-23 kHz ± 3 d frequency range.

The B2 is the larger of the two standmount offerings and sports a 6.5-inch aluminium midbass driver alongside the Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter S said to be good for 42 Hz-23 kHz ± 3 dB, while the more compact B1 utilises a 5.5-inch midbass unit returning a 48 Hz-23 kHz ± 3 dB frequency response according to the spec sheet. Both can be used with the optional STAND25 speakers stands.

Finally, C1 puts the Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter S, Folded Motion Waveguide and aluminium midbass drivers together with MartinLogan’s signature 2.5-way “Anti-Lobing” centre channel design.

MartinLogan's Motion Foundation Series of loudspeakers is now available, and we are awaiting for confirmed UK pricing but expect it to come in under the already good value Motion line.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality.
