McIntosh Launches MCD85 SACD/CD Player
McIntosh adds an SACD/CD player to join its MC830 solid-state amp and C8 tube amplifier.
McIntosh's MCD85 SACD/CD Player boasts a bevelled die-cast tray with disc reading performed by a high-quality disc mechanism using a twin-laser optical pickup (single objective lens, two laser units). Each laser employs different wavelengths optimised for SACD and CD. Meanwhile, a 2x read speed and buffer memory promises exemplary error correction and tracking.
The MCD85 SACD/CD Player also features a USB input that supports high-resolution audio (up to DSD256 and DXD 384 kHz). Additionally, the onboard quad-balanced, 8-channel (four left, four right), 32-bit/192 kHz DAC can be fed via the two coaxial and two optical (192kHz-capable) digital inputs.
The new open-chassis MCD85 SACD/CD Player has been designed to complement the recently launched MC830 Solid State Amplifier and C8 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier. The front-loading tray features a new, custom bevelled nose to match the angle of the chassis, while providing smooth and quiet disc handling, says the Binghamton, New York brand.
Other features include McIntosh's Power Control and Data Ports for seamless integration with McIntosh components. Meanwhile, other home audio equipment is accommodated by balanced and unbalanced fixed analogue stereo outputs.
Rounding things up are the classic McIntosh touches such as a die-cast aluminium name badge fitted to each side of the chassis, the front, top and rear of which is polished to a mirror finish. There's also a black glass front panel with direct LED backlighting, silver trim, an illuminated logo and rotary control knobs.
Orders for the £4,995 MCD85 can be placed now with shipping expected March 2021.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
