New Unison Research Loudspeakers

Unison Research has been building high quality loudspeakers and electronics in Italy for more than 20 years. The Max 1 loudspeaker is a new design optimised for use with their own valve amplifiers.

Max 1 is a two-way floorstanding reflex-loaded system, with substantial internal volume despite a compact footprint. Unison Research says this speaker can also be used in a 2-channel seutp, as well as a front channel in home theatre systems.

The 12" neodymium magnet woofer, made in Italy, is equipped with a diaphragm made from vegetable dough and carbon fibers. Able to dissipate more than 800 watts of continuous power, makes it a perfect match with a high efficiency compression driver. Also made in Italy, it has a titanium diaphragm with a 44 mm aluminum coil and aluminum windings to cancel the stresses and deformations caused by temperature. It is loaded with an elliptical Constant Coverage ESS aluminium horn with wide dispersion (60° x80°).

Unison Research says the Max is incredibly rugged, linear and with a natural sound and free of any nasality. The directivity index is constant within plus or minus 0.85 dB up to more than 12kHz.

The handcrafted crossover is a classic 12 db/octave design, featuring air-wound flat ribbon OFC copper, as well as Solen and Mundorf capacitors and resistors.

One of the design criteria for Max 1 was to make the impedance curve as smooth as possible to reduce the effect of the cables as well as the damping factor of the amplifier (tube or solid state). Cleverly, a selectable switch on the back of the Max changes the damping factor so that the diffuser maintains consistent performance with both valve amplifiers and solid state. While the Max has been optimised for use with tube amps, a simple toggle of this switch will result in excellent results with solid state amplification, according to the manufacturer.

The cabinet is made from 25mm thick MDF veneered in natural wood and further stiffened by internal bracing. The 50mm MDF front panel, is covered in synthetic leather.

To make the connections there are four external terminals to allow bi-amplification.

Unison Research Max 1 will be available in Australia early 2015, with a $8,995 RRP.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
