ONKYO JOINS THE IMAX ENHANCED FAMILY WITH SELECTED AV RECEIVER MODELS

Onkyo is the latest manufacturer to join the IMAX family after a recent firmware update made both its new THX Certified Select TX-RZ840 and TX-RZ740 AV Receivers IMAX Enhanced.

Both of Onkyo's new receivers have 9.2 channels of amplification and are rated at 215 watts per channel and 185 watts respectively, with the RZ-840 offering ultra-wide frequency response (5Hz- 100kHz).

Both receivers also offer 11.2 channel pre-outs, allowing them to be expanded for 7.2.4 layouts with the addition of a power amplifier.

In addition to being IMAX Enhanced, the RZ840 and RZ740 support a comprehensive range of surround formats, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. They also feature Dolby's new Atmos Height Virtualizer, which can create virtual surround and height effects on traditional speakers layouts such as 5.1 with legacy soundtracks.

Both the THX Certified Receivers have seven HDMI inputs (1 front), two outputs (Main [eARC], Sub/Zone 2). All HDMI inputs support HDCP 2.2, 4K/60p, HDR (Dolby Vision™, HDR10, HLG), BT.2020, 4:4:4/24-bit, 3D Video, DeepColor™, x.v.Colour, and LipSync with the HDMI output offering ARC.

As with other Onkyo Receivers, each receiver has built-in room correction, courtesy of Onkyo's proprietary AccuEQ Advance 9-point calibration with AccuReflex.

With Sonos compatibility, the RZ840 and RZ740 are ready to join multi-room network audio systems. Each also has built-in Chromecast and are compatible with AirPlay 2, DTS Play-Fi and FlareConnect.

When coupled with Google Assistant smart speakers, streaming services such as Amazon Music, Spotify, TIDAL, Deezer and TuneIn can be controlled by voice.

Both receivers are designed with parts selected on a listen-measure-listen basis which Onkyo says "delivers uncompromising reference-grade sound."

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
