ONKYO UNVEILS THX CERTIFIED TX-NR696 7.2 CHANNEL NETWORK AV RECEIVER

Onkyo is triumphantly pushing forward with its stream of feature-packed and well priced AV Receivers, and its new TX-NR696 AV Receiver is no exception.
Neither are they shy about its abilities, claiming the THX Certified Select AVR assures a resolution true to the original recording, with cinema-quality sound.
Onkyo’s claim is only made that more audacious with the TX-NR696 hitting the market for just $1,399 RRP.
The TX-NR696 is a 7.2 channel AVR with a quoted output of 175 watts per channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 10% THD, one channel driven). Although actual power output will vary, Onkyo has included a second power transistor doubling current-handling abilities for the front and centre channels.
Able to be configured in either 7.2 or 5.2.2 configurations, the TX-NR696 will decode Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer and DTS Virtual:X 3D processing. The TX-NR696 will also decode all of the ‘usual suspects’, such as Dolby® TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio® decoding and DTS® Neural:X up-mixing.
The TX-NR696 sound decoding abilities are further expanded, via the inclusion of THX listening modes for movies, music and games along with Onkyo’s proprietary sound optimisation modes.
As for video, the TX-NR696 supports HDCP 2.2, 4K/60p, HDR (Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG), BT.2020, 4:4:4 colour-space, 3D Video, ARC (Audio Return Channel), DeepColor™, x.v.Colour ™, and LipSync via HDMI.
In addition to offering Zone 2 output, the TX-NR696 supports network audio, with multi-room audio, streaming service integration and remote app control. Its network capabilities are rounded out with support for Sonos, AirPlay2, built-in Chromecast with voice control via Google Assistant, DTS Play-Fi, Flare Connect, Amazon Music, Spotify, Tidal and DEEZER.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
