SENNHEISER ANNOUNCES HD 660 S HEADPHONES

Head-Fi enthusiasts were getting excited with the speculation this week of two new previously unconfirmed headphone releases.
The first of the two releases, StereoNET has confirmed Sennheiser has launched a new open-back dynamic headphone that builds on the legacy of the HD 650.
Sennheiser says its new HD 660 S delivers even better sound, comfort, and versatility, and features a new and improved transducer design that delivers lower harmonic distortion. It also features a lower impedance of 150 Ohms.
The drivers look very similar to those used on the HD 700, although early listening impressions suggest the sound is similar to the HD 650 but with more pronounced sub bass.
Axel Grell, who looks after 'Audiophile' products for Sennheiser told StereoNET:
The HD 660 S reflects and enriches today’s increasingly multifaceted audiophile experience. It frees listeners to enjoy music to the fullest – whether digital or analog, on a mobile device or on a home HiFi system,
Thanks to a specially manufactured precision stainless steel fabric which is adapted to the contour of the diaphragm, control of diaphragm movements are improved.
Sennheiser carefully select and match the diaphragms by hand to ensure consistently narrow (± 1 dB) tolerances.
Together, these refinements achieve the authentic, lifelike sound of the HD 660 S – with crisp bass, excellent mid frequency response and a gentle, pleasantly natural treble.
The new HD 660 S boasts a matt black and anthracite design while their robust but lightweight construction should allow for hours of comfort.
They feature elliptical ear cups to follow the anatomy of the ear and utilise thick padding on the headband. Unlike many other brands, Sennheiser also offers replaceable ear cushion ensuring your investment will last for many years.
The lower impedance will lend itself to digital audio players and smartphones and are supplied with detachable cables, with either a 6.35mm stereo plug or balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn stereo plug. A 6.35mm to 3.5mm adaptor is also included.
The Sennheiser HD 660 S will be available mid-November and will sell for $799.95 locally.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
