Sony Announces HT-AX7 Speaker With Detachable Speakers & Spatial Audio

Sony has just announced the new HT-AX7, a unique speaker system that supports spatial audio and offers an interesting mechanism with detachable rear speakers and an upmixer algorithm that transforms standard stereo sound into surround sound.

In the box, you get the bigger, main frontal unit that has the space for the two smaller rear speakers to be attached and charged on top. The front unit has two speaker units and two passive radiators, one on either side, with a rectangular shape that Sony claims will provide greater vocal clarity and punchier bass while reducing distortion.

The two smaller rear speakers come pre-paired with the main unit out of the box, so it’s ready to be used immediately with no fussing about. With up to 30 hours of battery life, it’ll certainly be more than enough for any movie marathons you might want to have while lying in bed.

If you’re not looking for a surround sound system, though, the HT-AX7 can double up as a normal speaker system that broadcasts the same stereo mix through all three speakers, making it rather ideal for parties in larger homes where you might want speakers in a large living room or in multiple rooms playing the same playlist.

The entire system has no wires, so even though you might be tempted to use it with your television, you might be better served with a proper home theatre setup instead. The HT-AX7 is definitely designed to be something that’s able to move with you from room to room and to be used with your gadgets. Of course, you could certainly pair it with your television via Bluetooth if you want, but there’s no support for a Wi-Fi connection, which is a bit of a headscratcher.

Sony is continuing their push for using sustainable materials, however, which is excellent to see. The HT-AX7 uses a fabric material made from 100% recycled PET bottles and incorporates recycled plastics, while the packaging uses Sony’s proprietary Original Blended Material, which comprises bamboo, sugarcane and recycled paper that we’ve seen in other packaging like for the WF1000-XM4 and other products.

The Sony HT-AX7 will be available from August 2023, where it is expected to be priced at around £550/ €550.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
