Sony Announces STR-AN1000 8K AV Receiver

Sony surprised everyone overnight with the announcement of five new 8K-capable AV Receivers, one being the successor to STR-DN1080 - the STR-AN1000.

The STR-AN1000 is a 7.2 Channel AV Received offering 8K video and immersive 3D audio in 7.2 or 5.2.2 setup with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X formats. Connectivity options also include Works with SONOS, Chromecast Built-in, Apple AirPlay, and Spotify Connect— all via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.5/6/7. Power output is stated as 7 x 165 W 6 ohms, 1 kHz, 1ch, THD 0.9%.

Supporting Dolby Vision, HDR10, Hybrid Log Gamma, and IMAX Enhanced, the AN1000 offers six HDMI inputs with two supporting full 8K and 4K/120 video sources. Two HDMI outputs similarly support full 8K and 4K/120 video sources.

One particular feature worthy of mention is that the AN1000 can also offer wireless connectivity for Sony’s SA-RS3S & SA-RS5 wireless rear speakers and SA-SW3 & SASW5 wireless subwoofers. It also provides several centre-speaker technologies, including Center Speaker Lift Up to centre the dialogue on your screen and Acoustic Center Sync, which, when mated with a Sony Bravia TV, uses the speaker as the centre channel in a surround setup. Nifty!

The Sony STR-AN1000 is priced at $899.99 in the USA, and we are eagerly awaiting UK availability and cost.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
