Sony HT-S400 2.1 Surround Soundbar and Sub Released

Sony's latest 2.1 soundbar and sub offering, the HT-S400, promises to deliver virtual surround sound for £260.

The Sony HT-S400 comprises a 200W soundbar and 130W wireless sub. Together, that's 330W total power output from this relatively compact and budget-conscious offering.

Being 2.1, you're not going to get Dolby Atmos - you'll need either the A5000 or A7000 for that kind of behaviour. However, Dolby Digital is on board with Sony's own virtual surround sound technology, dubbed S-Force PRO Front Surround. This, says the company, emulates cinema-style surround sound, thanks to its unique digital sound field processing technology.

Additionally, the front speakers include an X-Balanced Speaker Unit. These rectangular drivers also boast a "Separated Notch Edge" that's said to improve vertical amplitude symmetry, which is essential for clear sound quality.

Furthermore, as well as the 160mm subwoofer being wireless, the HT-S400 can receive wireless audio from compatible TVs via Bluetooth A2DP. Check if yours is supported, although if you own a 2021 Sony Bravia TV, you should be OK.

Rounding things up is a concealed OLED display and the system's 'Night' mode that eases off the bass so as not to disturb your sleeping household.

Finally, as well as using the compact remote, your soundbar settings should automatically appear on your Bravia TV in the settings menu, enabling you to make adjustments using your telly's controller. Meanwhile, connectivity includes the usual suspects of HDMI ARC and optical inputs.

The Sony HT-S400 soundbar will be available in April 2022 and will cost £260.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
