SPOTIFY LAUNCHES FREE MUSIC APP IN AUSTRALIA

Available only to Australian Android users so far, Stations is Spotify's latest app that has launched via the Play Store this week.

The app opens right into a curated directory of playlists, similar to those found via the Spotify app, but now called 'stations'.

The Play Store listing describes the app:

Stations is the easiest way to listen to the music you love. Totally free,

Stations is reported to be an experiment by Spotify to "make it easy for anyone to listen to great music."

Spotify Stations

Within seconds of loading the app, select your station and the music starts. With functionality reminiscent of Pandora which ceased operating in Australia in 2017, users can 'like' tracks and Stations will personalise the music played.

When you have access to all the music in the world, finding the right thing to play can feel like a challenge. With Stations, you can listen immediately, and switching stations is simple and seamless — no searching or typing needed.

There's no ability to search or skip tracks. Just a pause or like (in the form of a heart) function.

You can customise which stations will appear for you based on artists you like. However if you already have a Spotify account and the app installed on your device, then the customisation happens 'automagically'.

No word yet either on an iOS version of Stations, or the roll-out to other countries.

Get the app here, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Could Stations be Spotify's answer to put the final nail in the Pandora coffin?

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
