THE HISTORY OF RADIO AT THE MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL HI-FI SHOW
The 2018 Melbourne International Hi-Fi Show at the magnificent Pullman Mercure Hotel this year will feature a display of vintage radios thanks to The Historical Radio Society of Australia (HRSA).
The society boasts a membership of over 1200 enthusiasts who collect and restore almost all radio types, from the very first wireless in the start of the 1920s, through to the wooden Consoles, or “Cathedral” mantels and bakelite mantel radios of the 1930s. Others collect and restore valve hi-fi or the plastic finish mantel radios from the 1950s and beyond.
Collectively, the society maintains an inventory of 30,000 radios in total.
Valves are at the forefront, however, some members have fabulous collections of solid-state radios, from Hi-Fi through to novelty types. Australian-made is often preferred, though many collections include fine radios from overseas, like Atwater Kent.
The HRSA display at the 2018 Melbourne International Hi-Fi Show, October 12-14, will include a selection of vintage radios and TV, and some of the best 1960s-1970s era Hi-Fi from its Pioneer Australia Museum.
