Zeitgeist Launches New Earphones Made With Exotic Woods

Earphone brand Zeitgeist Germany is adding to its existing Artisan and Whisky product lines with the new Trees Collection, using responsibly sourced wood from sequoia, zebrano, redheart and olive trees to form the shell of their new Trees earphones.

Thomas Halbgewachs, founder of Zeitgeist Germany, told StereoNET:

"We're breathing new musical life into trees that have come to a natural end. These trees have seen hundreds, even thousands of years of history: our artisans treat them with the reverence they deserve and ensure their beauty lives on. No pair of Trees earphones is identical – each has its own organic patterns of growth and grain – which just adds to their wonder,"

The collection includes four models, each using wood sourced from a different region of the world.

The California Sequoia is made with wood from the giant redwood trees that dot the coasts of California and Oregon. This wood imparts a warm, red hue and straight grain pattern to the shell.

The African Zebrano uses zebrano wood, which is native to Central Africa. With dark brown and black streaks resembling a zebra's stripes, the wood's wavy grain is said to be hard to saw and plane, meaning extra care and hard work has to be put into making each shell.

Crafted with wood sourced from olive trees in the Mediterranean, the Mediterranean Olive earbuds have a beautiful golden hue and wavy grain.

Last but not least, the Yucatan Redheart features wood from the Redheart tree, which is native to Central and South America and has a deep red hue.
All the earphones are handcrafted in Zeitgeist's workshop near Heidelberg, Germany, and no two earphones will ever be identical due to the different textures, grains and colour variations in the wood used.

The company claims to have studied thousands of ear impressions to find the perfect fit for most people, and thus, the earphones are offered in both Regular and Small sizes. While there isn't much info on the drivers inside, Zeitgeist describes them as a proprietary tuned, 2-way balanced armature system from Sonion with a 17ohms impedance and a frequency range of 15Hz to 35kHz.

Each earphone comes with a 5-year warranty after registration, and a 1.2-meter silver-plated copper cable with either 3.5mm or 4.4mm termination can be selected at the point of purchase. Five Final Type E ear tips, from XS to XL, are also included, and everything comes packaged in a nice display case.

The California Sequoia and African Zebrano retail at €999, while the Mediterranean Olive and Yucatan Redheart are priced at €899. The Zeitgeist Germany Trees Collection is now available for purchase via the brand's website or at luxury stockists like Harrods and Selfridges.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
